I took delivery of a pair of these yesterday. I live in a fairly modern house (12 years old) with presumably excellent wiring.
Setting up was very easy indeed. Literally, plug one in, attach Ethernet cable to router. Plug the other in, attach ethernet cable to PC. Result = Instant connectivity. No passwords or utilities required.
Out of curiosity I did install the Solwise utility onto Vista 64. It reports that the connection speed is 190Mbit/s which is about as good a connection as this standard is going to allow. I've not done a throughput test yet as I didn't have time last night, but I did stream some HD content from my PC to my Showcenter and it worked a treat. Much more responsive than my previous wireless connection in starting the stream and no lag at all.
I also had a quick game of TF2 to check that the lag and disconnects that wireless brought me had been fixed and indeed they had. I didn't get one instance of lag or packet loss, and the latency (ping) was very good.
I also left the devices on all evening to monitor the temperature and the outside of the unit was only warm to the touch after several hours use. So it shouldn't overheat like some models out there!
The utility also allows the network name between the devices to be changed, and allows a rudimentary quality of service option. I set it to "Online Gaming" which in truth I have no idea what ports/packets it will prioritise. There are 2 other settings, Video/Media and VoIP that can be set as prioritised traffic. To be honest, with only two adaptors and one PC using this type of connection, I don't think QoS is required in my set-up. Potentially though with many adaptors and many PC's vying for the bandwidth it might be a useful option for those with larger networks.
All In all I'm well impressed. A substantial improvement over my wireless connection in terms of stability and speed. Just how much faster it is than my wireless I'll find out tonight when I test actual throughput using JPerf. Watch this space!
