I need a new laptop, have roughly 1k to spend............and keep been told to look at the macbooks..........I'm from a Windows background but learning linux as I go along. So go on...............make me want a Mac :p

Go into the Apple shop and have a play.. you will be dazzled by all the wonders of OS X :p

- They look better, and work better
- You can use windows on a mac
- Whats a virus?

more here.. http://www.apple.com/getamac/

Seriously go have a play on one, if your not instantly shocked by the coolness you dont deserve one :p

I've had a Mac for about a week now and I'm quite impressed. I've been a follower of Microsoft all of my computing life but refused to upgrade to Vista due to the problems I've heard about.

In my experience it's taken a little while to get used to but so far I'm extremely happy with it. I know everyone says "Macs just work" and all of that but it's actually quite true!

As mentioned previously, I'd have a play with one and see how you find it.

I'm in the same position. I have a near dead 6 year old dell laptop and have set aside around £1500 for an upgrade, I want something that will last for atleast another 5 years and play the odd game (which is currently EvE online) at highish res and detail. I looked at the mac book pro 17" today but wonder how well this will play EvE and how well it's going to last.

It will be more than enough to play EvE. The Macbook Pro is at the very high end for whats available in laptops so it should last + Mac's hold there value more..

Basically it is just an all-round nice experience from the day you receive it and open the box. For me it is just hassle free computing. As I've gotten older i don't play games anymore, i just want a computer to work nicely and i don't have to fiddle with it.

I also love the way they look and are designed. Sure you pay abit extra but it is not exactly that much more, especially if you get the HE discount.

A Dell XPS M1330 at the same spec of the middle macbook is £658, compared to the macbook at £713 with he discount. So its not that much more plus you get a 3 year warrenty with the macbook.

Refurbished MacBook Pro 2.4Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo
17-inch glossy widescreen display
2GB memory
160GB hard drive
8x SuperDrive (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT with 256MB of GDDR3 memory
Built-in iSight Camera

for £1379 - does that seem like a good deal?

My worry is that it might struggle to run EvE-Trinity at full res in high detail and also be capable of playing good games further down the line

I'm not worried about the OS, I'm a hardened Linux user anyway so it's nice to have a good console etc.

Wow, cheers for all the input guys..........seemingly positive too :)

So of the people that have moved over to a mac from a pc, is there anything you miss at all?

Also, not sure how feasible this would be but I was hoping for a small package for traveling with a reasonable battery life and the ability to play movies either straight from DVD (like a macbook) or ripped if need be (like the macbook air). Not fussed about gaming. It will be a glorified internet browser/media player/word processor :p

Cheers again everyone :)

Im getting a MacBook on thursday as an addition to my Mac Mini.. From what i have read the mac book's battery is pritty good compared to PC laptops.

To be honest i have had a 17" imac for a few months and i will NEVER go back to windows. Its just a much better experience knowing that the operating system knows what its doing (if you know what i mean). When i was on Vista i was always aware of virus's, malware etc etc. Plus macs are so much better made its like chalk and cheese. GET ONE, GIVE IT A FAIR CHANCE AND I THINK WITHIN A MONTH YOU WILL FEEL THE CLICK AND THINK "Yeah im a mac convert"!

I have had my macbook for over three months now and have not turned my PC on at all in this time. If i am honest the only thing i miss is being able to play company of heroes. Apart from that there is nothing i miss at all.

However if i went back to a pc i know there is things that i would miss, expose being one of them!

Ok ok, so the mac route seems promising :) Right, so not being able to afford a pro what would you nice people recommend for my 1k budget. I keep being seduced by the air due to its ultra portability so if need be could scrape the bottom of the barrel for the air. And damn that backlit keyboard is damn sexy :p

In terms of all-round good value i would go for the middle spec MacBook if you are not going pro. Also as the macbooks have just been updated its a good time to buy.

While the air is very attractive i would not recommend it for use as a main machine.
