A few of you guys will already know but... I've agreed a deal on a new car.

The 530i is excellent but I can't help thinking that financially its a bit of a waste - it does 20mpg around town which isn't THAT much of a problem becuase I don't do huge mileage but its quite clear that the government isn't a fan of cars emitting high levels of C02 and this situation is only going to get worse. From next March I'll have to pay £430 a year just for road tax and this is only going to get higher as time goes by - and the residuals of the car will take a big hammering anyway. So, it's worth more now than it will be at any point in the future so it seemed a prudent time to trade it in before the values took a proper beating. Soon, nobody will want a post 2001 200g/km+ car.

But what was I to replace it with? I'd come to expect certain levels of quality and I really didnt want to compromise. I love Mondeos but I think I've done the whole Ford thing now. I wanted pretty much what I had now, subtle yet sporty styling, premium build, lots of toys but without the anti environmental caning.

So without further ado I chose.... an Audi A4 Quattro Sport Avant :D Don't need an estate, but as you'll be aware I've never been one to buy something I need. Managed to get one with Audi's excellent navigation system with SD card slots, etc etc.

Engine wise? 1.9 TDI 130, so it should really shift when the need takes me. I pick it up next week (I've taken out a small bridging loan for it which needs to be approved) so I've only got the dealer photos so far:

It's not as quick as the 530 but it's damn close, looks good, and is nowhere near the ridiculous taxation levels. It also has EVERYTHING the 530 had kit wise and more - the nav system makes the centre console look far better. Had to be a quattro though as FWD as for small shopping trolleys :)

Thoughts?

Remapping will be on the agenda but only once I find a more remap friendly insurer. Stock it's not bad at all - 130bhp but LOADS of torque :D

I think you've gone a bit light in the head mate. You do what 20 miles a week or something silly and a diesel would be worth it for this?

Also to quote yourself.

Yea but how many times does the need take you around town :p

The same way a Mondeo is close to a BMW 5 Series? :D

Think you may have exaggerated that a bit, even after a remap and a millitek exhaust!! However 0-60 is not everything, well specced and will save you a bundle in the long run. After all your against diesel posts you've given in to them!

Gratz ^^

Ok it's nowhere near 0-60 but it's once moving where it shows its strength. It doesnt feel THAT much slower, if at all, when accelerating down sliproads etc :)

Considering you've had to take a loan out I feel it's all a bit false economy tbfh but aslong as you're happy :)

Short term thing at a competitive rate. No PCP's here :)

It's true that during the week I don't normally do huge mileage but I do travel to Southampton, London every so often and it will literally cost half what it does in the 530. Adds up.
