new vista oem licence required after motherboard swap

Hey folks
Am I correct in saying that if I change a motherboard in a vista oem build computer that a new registration code/licence has to be purchased?. Does this still apply if the motherboard was faulty and had to be changed anyway?.

If it's a replacement of a faulty product you are still covered IIRC.

But if I the model motherboard is no longer being sold am I allowed to replace it with different model?.

if the motherboard was under warranty then your ok to continue using your license/key...

well is the broken motherboard under warranty??

it must be similar to your motherboard.

Don't know its not my motherboard have been asked to help a friend sort out his system, me thinks he wants to use the oppurtunity to change mb's.

It is supposed to replaced with the same or equivalent.

yeah that's what I thought. Tell me how do the guys who change out their hardware every 6-8 months deal with this. I can't believe they buy a new OS everytime?.

buy retail. if he changes his motherboard every 6-8 months

Also is the price of a new license/key the same as buying the os oem from overclockers?.

nope.. only oem

if it's a one off motherboard upgrade he could just buy another oem... but if he upgrades his motherboard a lot then buy retail.

When I had to replace a motherboard after fedex destroyed my PC during my move back from Cyprus I installed vista on the new one, it didn't activate first time saying it was already in use, I tried it again anyway and it activated fine the second time.

I don't want to get into this debate but it is breaking the law if you do not have a valid licence for a piece of software.

Hello Rich43, may I ask why? This doesn't apply to Ubuntu obviously but it does to Windows XP - The licensing terms are exactly the same for both Windows XP and Windows Vista.
