Then people towards the rear of the cabin - we were at the front - said that there was a fire, and were shouting fire, fire.

We thought we were going to crash. We didn't have a clue what to do, so we just sat there, holding hands and hoping we'd get back down again.

After a couple of seconds you realised that there were flames coming out. People started shouting, and we were just hanging on for grim death.

So basically 1 engine has a fire, and everyone goes mental....wtf. Surely all the pilot does is shut off the fuel to the engine and then lands at the nearest airport

To be fair, if I was sat helpless in a compressed cabin, soaring at a few thousand feet and there really was a fire, I'd be somewhat concerned.

People aren't being pathetic, it's self-preservation.

Also, don't forget that the media love sensalisation.

I have been known to get quite nervous before I fly, so if I’d been on that flight and the engine caught fire, I’d panic a little.

I’d not like the thought of ‘perhaps I’m not going to come out of this alive' and it would make me twitchy. Everyone panics when faced with crisis, not only that bbc does tend to make stories sound more exciting to please the reader.

Don’t think I’d call them pathetic. Concerned maybe, panicked and frightened.

I would have thought that most people would go a little mental with an engine fire on board an airplane. He probably did cut the fuel after shutting it down.

How's the average punter supposed to know that a plane can still function perfectly while one of its engines is a ball of flames?

Hmmm...thousands of feet up, and one of the things thats keeping you up there catches fire.

That may be a walk in the park for you, Mr Last Action Hero, but for most folk it would be utterly terrifying.

Heck, I panicked on a flight once when it hit bad turbulence. Flying can be totally terrifying when you hit problems, and the average joe flyer doesn’t know a lot about modern avionics, so seeing anything out of the ordinary is going to scare the life out of them.

Plus, its like a cascading effort, one person looks scared to death the rest seem to follow, the look of fear on folks faces can invoke fear in yourself, just think. You look out the window, smoke coming out of the part that keeps the plane in the sky, ask yourself – would you not be a tad concerned??

Tbh anyone who has never been in a plane that's had an engine fire is in no position to call any of those passengers pathetic. I include myself in the former set of people.

I've watched plenty of aircrash investigation, I always fear the worse... :D
If I was on a plane where an engine was on fire it'd be brown trousers for me Would be a bit difficult to think logically if you're in a floating tin which you have no control of and theres flames coming from the thing that keeps it working.
