Best Spyware (free)

Presumably for windows OS?

Spybot search and destroy is a good one.

Adaware (both free and for profit) used to be really good, now it's a bit slow and crappy but it's a good idea to run both.

Careful if you go googling for some too as you'll some across some nasties in disguise.

Incidentally you may already be doing this but there are other forms of protection too such as a non directx browser (Opera, Firefox, Konqueror (for *nix)) and firefox coupled with adblock and noscript is a pretty formiddable setup.

Thanks for the answers but i've tried these and far too much stuff ids still getting through.

Obviously they are a good detector, i need a protector, sorry about that, my fault!

Spybot has the resident to stop things getting through.

The best defense is using common sense and decent policies.

Where exactly are you getting all this spyware from?

The solution with firefox and the add-ons is a great way of reducing infection vectors too.

You could look at more extreme solutions like sand boxing the machine but i seriously cant see how, when you aware of all the spyware, that you aren't changing your habbits

You will find that even the best spyware software wont be able to protect you against everything. If you can be bothered/or have time run checks with more than one software but make sure you only use 1 realtime checker as running more than one have been known to severly slow down your computer.

You should download "Hijackthis" and run that from time to time as well as Spybot. You can run hijackthis and paste the log file into the http://www.hijackthis.de website and it will tell you if something is legit or should probably be removed.

this is a great suggestion its what i did when i noobed up an installation by clicking next until it installed. after i spyboted and hi-jack my system was running fine again

I would have recommended Ewido/AVG's anti-spyware program but much to my horror when I tried to download it myself at work earlier it's been removed from their site

Spybot
Spywareblaster
Common sense once you've cleaned yourself ;)
And I'll also 2nd Windows Defender! Free, decently powerful and silent. It helped out on a clients riddled laptop when other mentioned solutions failed so can't be that bad :)

Superantispyware is good.

Agreed SuperAntispyware has a great detection and removal rate

The free version is on demand so no real time protection

Spybot is decent

worth checking Spyware Terminator has a built in HIPS thou I have seen a few false positives which puts me off it slightly also real time only works well on XP and Vista 32bit,on demand only on Vista x64.

worth adding Haute Secure to your browser and setting a global template

EDIT _ Spyware Terminator has just been updated to version 2.2 today.

I've personally not had any spyware protection as such installed.

Only ever use Firefox here, so the most I'll get it those tracking cookies which are pretty much unstoppable unless you restrict the sites which are allowed to use cookies.

I find it's very hard to pick up spyware through simple browsing these days. Just be careful of what you download and run.
