Spielberg gets Ghost in the Shell

Spielberg can be shmaltzy at times, but he can still pull off pretty well done stuff. Munich was very sensibly and seriously done I thought (even if I did find it rather slow). I'll be interested to see how he does, it's a good world to interpret, and I hope he does something interesting. :)

I don't see anyone getting too up-in-arms about this really, since GitS has had an excellent run already, with three films and a TV series. It's not like they've grabbed up an IP before it's had a chance to go anywhere else.

Sounds interesting.. I love ghost in the shell so hope they don't just do a bad remake, would be nice if they do something true to the original

It should have gone to JJ Abrams or ideally Kubrick. I hate to say it but Speilberg's made as much crap as he has quality, so I wont get my hopes up (especially being as a live action GITS will require something extra special).

Should have gone to James Cameron, he is a huge fan of the film. With his Terminator and Aliens background I think he would have handled it well.

Think it's actually a good choice since the director's opinion weights a lot in this case and should help to protect some of his views of how the movie should be made. If it was a lesser known director then DW would have more saying as to making the movie a PG12 and all that crap or making the plot more simplistic for the masses and stuff like that that would ruin the film.
As said i hope they keep true to the manga and i hope to see Major in it aswell :P
As for the music department Kenji Kawai (might spelled the name wrong) did a very good job in the music department. Making of a Cyborg was a masterpiece as the main theme of the manga. If all goes well we could get an amazing end result which will only be a good thing for us, since more people will get to know GITS and maybe even influence Hollywood in a degree to make more of an effort into producing artworks and not crap. If every movie was another LOTR in terms of quality then Hollywood would be a much more acclaimed and offcourse rich place :P

After Transformers, I'll wait until more info comes out on this one. Dreamworks should be shot for what they allowed that fool Bay to do to the Transformers. Personally, I think you'll find it dumbed down and kept a PG12 so they can flog a bunch of toys to go with it.

So who should play the Major?

Transformers is, and always was, a childrens series.

EDIT - Think I semi misread your post. I don't think the Transformers film was dumbed down.

What I meant was Ghost will be dumbed down, re-written for the masses, and given a low rating in order to sell merchandise. Dreamworks won't miss a trick and certainly won't worry about offending a few fans by making it fit thier marketing stragegy.

Transformers wasn't dumbed down as such but Bay or Speilberg clearly wanted thier own Jar Jar Binks character (Frenzy). Made the Autobots look like cretins and the decepticons as frail as an Iphone.

Also, Transformers has evolved somewhat and the grapic novels aren't for children. Bit of a shock when you first see a Decep stamp on a human :) But yes they are for kids first and foremost - I'd still want my money back at 10 years old though.

It doesn't actually say that Spielberg will be directing, only that he made sure the rights were owned by Dreamworks.
Do you think it will the Laughing Man the Pupetteer or something new?

JJ Abrams ? Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

His track record is Alias, LOST and Cloverfield......all of which started well and then he loses track of where it is heading and it fizzles into absurdity.

Kubrick??? If only he can direct from beyond the grave.
