http://www.msicomputer.co.uk/index.php?func=proddesc&prod_no=1123&maincat_no=1&cat2_no=170

and say if i got this card (not sure which one to get):

so either this:

or this:
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-088-OK&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=927

i really need help. ive tried researching this but i dont know if my pcie 16x slot is 1.0 or 1.1 or what ever.

can anyone help me out ?

then why do i keep hearing that there is a problem with via chipsets and 8800gt(s) cards. and why is this guy in this thread saying that i need to flash the gcard somehow.

Good luck .
what?

What i said:
so ill have to do that when i get my 8800gt ... thats pants .

wont it work automatically and install liek a normal card . boot up install drivers etc ?

Sounds like rubbish my 8800gt works fine in my old s939 board you should be fine
It's not rubbish really because it isn't s939 that's the problem, but older VIA chipsets compatibility with PCI-E 2.0 cards.

Blackhawk47, looking at your motherboard specs it looks like you wouldn't get an 8800GT(s) to work straight out of the box. On this page you can see what cards have been tested/verified to work with your motherboard.

i wouldnt of thought my motherboard was to old...anyway i think that test vga page thing is a little out of date and not really that useful (also with ram etc)

the simple fact that ive run a 8600gts on there
... and at the moment a 7800gt completely fine ......

I thought that only applied to the Asrock board because the slot on that baord was only 4x as well, so you may just need a later motherboard BIOS.

magpie1966, we know that, what we're saying is VIA doesn't support the standard properly and that's where PCI-e 2.0 falls over.

so will it work or not work . that is the question.

i think i have plenty of space for it in my case so thats not a problem.

i have researched a bit and im not sure which chipsets work with the 8800gt(s) and which dont.

Well I think the distance selling stuff lets you send it back for no apparrent reason within 7 days even if you open it, so you could try it, and if it doesn't work send it back?

hmm i guess .

but if it doesnt work i guess im stuck with getting something like the old style 8800gts . do the ati cards like 3870xt and the like have the same problems ?

PCI-E 2.0 still though, the 3870 is about the same speed as the 640mb GTS if memory serves.

EDIT: I'm running mine on PCI-E 1.0, but I'm on an Nvidia chipset.

The p4m900 chipset that is on Blackhawk47's motherboard is the same that is on the Asrock that needs the fix.

I've never ran into this problem but if Blackhawk47 gets the 8800GT and it doesn't work straight away he will know what to do. If it does work then it's happy days. Better to have the information ready than having to look for it whilst being extremely urinated off :D.
