Valve announces Steam Cloud - Online Network to Store Saved Games Indefinitely

Valve are introducing another brilliant idea called SteamCloud. It will allow the company to store your user data online. This includes save games, keyboard configurations, preferences etc.

Valve today announced Steam Cloud, a free Steam system that will retain users' saved games and configuration files indefinitely.

Half-Life and Half-Life 2 will be the first games to support the service. User key mappings will also be saved in Counter-Strike, and Left 4 Dead will ship with the feature.

This was confirmed a while ago, just not officially announced. Still no timeframe given for full implementation though I see...

Indeed, they've talking about for a while, but unlike other 'blue sky' chat, it looks like this will be delivered upon! Steam just gets better and better.

I have always been thinking of an idea like this, too many times have i got half way through a game and removed it to play another only to find out when i get back that my gamesaves were deleted.

Uh... do the sensible thing, install your games onto a different drive/partition?

I havenet had to reinstall anything Steam (or any game related) for well over 3 years, and all my saves are safe too.

What this does do is allow you to have your save games on any computer. Go to a friends, log into their steam on their pc using your username and bosh, your saves and configs all there

It's a very good idea, 'cloud computing' looks like the next big thing and it's already happening with things such as Microsoft Live Mesh. It makes sense on Steam since the game data files are already stored in the cloud so having the save data will come in handy especially if you use your Steam account on more than one computer like me.

The term 'cloud' is the Internet in the context of computing and it comes from diagrams where the Internet is always drawn as a cloud.

Used to play CS:S whenever I had free time, then a year+ ago I bought an xbox 360..

It's just not the same.
