Just looking over on the EVGA forums again, and definitely there is an issue with the GTX 280 throttling down while gaming. This is repeated over on NV News. Not sure if it's a problem with the cards temps that is causing it, or a software/driver issue.

What have the GTX 280 users on this forum experienced ?
And what version fo the GTX have you got ? bgg, evga etc..

Christ Nvidia really are in the ****

<sarcasm>Because of coure ATI wont have any similar problems with thier new cards</sarcasm>

Sheesh, they've only been out a week, give it time for the driver updates to sort out any niggles. Get things in perspective.

Before you go thinking I'm an NV fanboy, I've just ordered a 4870.

i think you should sell it on bay and get something else less haste

And why would he want to sell the fastest gfx card on the planet? He obviously has the money to buy one? Good luck to him I say.

Well those threads really don't fill me with confidence, there is obviously an over heating issue with these cards, one of the reviewers of the GTX280 posted the following,

"I wanted to let you know that I have reported this thread to my contacts at NVIDIA. I actually experienced a similar issue with the GeForce GTX 280 *** Edition from EVGA in that NVIDIA's system monitor reported a GPU temperature of 104C within a few seconds of running the RTHDRIBL utility.

When I noticed the extreme temperature, I immediately shut down the utility and my system and attempted to remove the graphics card, but it was extremely hot to the touch. After waiting a few minutes I removed the graphics card and installed the NVIDIA reference graphics card I received, along with re-installing the drivers. The temps on the NVIDIA reference graphics card reached a peak of 78C running RTHDRIBL.

I then removed the NVIDIA reference graphics card and re-installed the EVGA graphics card, which ran fine with peak temps reaching 80C as it is moderately overclocked. I apologize for not mentioning this in the review, but I thought this incident was a fluke. Now that other people are experiencing a similar issue, there may be more to this than I originally thought."

Same problem here on my BFG 280 OC.

Getting quite peeved with the whole situation now. Run Crysis and about 10 mins in little artifact start and the whole thing comes to a halt and I have to exit to Windows and reboot.

I only got it yesterday, I take it I can send this POS back to OcUK for a refund?

Really not happy.

I had a BFG GTX 280 OC. You'll see I've posted in the nvnews thread

There is definitely something odd going on with a few of the cards. Mine jumped from 50C idle to 105C in seconds running furmark. And this was in an open case, with a very reasonable ambient case temp of 24C. Overclock even 1Mhz and as soon as it got past 75C or so it dropped its clocks and the card crawled. Needed a reboot to clear it, at stock speeds it ran fine even at silly temps. Fan ramped up and down just fine. Thing is, it went to 100% fan all the time and did so a lot faster than any card I've ever seen.

Some people are reporting great overclocks and lower temps, but careful overclocking on this one showed artifacts in Crysis v.high with AA as low as 620Mhz core, with temps reaching 90C in game. Looking around, I think there's a 'few' bad cores out there, with very little headroom. Its not down to bad contact as the air coming from mine was extremely hot, indicating the cooler was working.

I will say, apart from that card is very fast, slightly faster than a 9800GX2 in most of the games I tried, in a few it was twice as fast (GX2 problems of course)

Sorry to hear you guys are having problems like this. I am glad I asked this question though. My situation is have a 650i sli mobo which is 100% stable (unlike the 680i I once had), and I have 2 x 8800gt cards. No complaints what so ever. I was considering a GTX 280 as an upgrade despite Anandtech showing 2xgt's in sli matching/beating it. But I mainly wanted it, as I prefer a single card solution and like the idea of 1gig ram and a 512bit bus which I am sure contributes to the smoother gameplay over the 512meg of usable memory on the GX2 or any other G92 SLI setup. Mr.Big on another thread reported this as did HardOCP when they benched the GTX 280 and compared it with a 9800GTX SLI rig. But after reading about these overheating and throttlilng issues I guess I can wait til this problem is solved.

Did you send it back in the end? I got same issue in Furmark as well btw.

Going to return it today, just been on the phone to OcUK and he said I should RAM and return for a refund under DSA.

Before I get ready and go the post office does anyone think this is driver related or just bad hardware?

Well it seems from reading through the third link that Nvidia are working on a solution,

"EVGA already stated that they have contacted NV about it and they are working towards a solution. Which is great news"

"It has been reported and Jacob said NVIDIA will have a fix soon"

EVGA should carry some weight if they are complaining to Nvidia.

I've requested an RMA on the BFG and given them the option of sending an EVGA (now same price) in return, if not refund will do.

*sigh* Now my telly's phono audio input for HDMI 2 is knackered so no sound from my 'puter as well as borked grpahics!

:(

It sounds like it's basically a crapshoot whether you get a good 'un or not. Seems plenty of people over on the evga forums have evga cards with this "issue" too.
