Apple released a pre-release version of iTunes 7.7 for developers tonight. In the Read Me of the iTunes installer is a hint at a previously unannounced iPhone/iPod Touch application:

Use iTunes 7.7 to sync music, video, and more with iPhone 3G, and download applications from the iTunes Store exclusively designed for iPhone and iPod touch with software version 2.0 or later. Also use the new Remote application for iPhone or iPod touch to control iTunes playback from anywhere in your home -- a free download from the App Store.
Apple reveals that they will be offering a free app on the App Store that allows you to remotely control iTunes in your home from your iPhone or iPod Touch. The application will presumably work under Wi-Fi to control playback of iTunes.

Apple has previously patented methods to implement such an iPhone Media remote control.

This will be AWESOME, Roll on July 11th! :D

close...what we actually want is a remote desktop client. This is a good start though.

Had that on my K750i back in 2005 :p

Nice to see it making an appearance on the Touch though. Next up, wifi synching back to iTunes please.

Salling Clicker?

Wi-Fi syncing would be awesome.

Something like that, it was ages ago so I can't really remember. I've seen the Zune 2 in action with wifi sync and it's pretty cleverly done - automatic when it's connected to the charger, and can be done manually if you want to eat your battery a bit. I can't wait to be able to walk in the door, slap my iPod in its dock and have my play count updated and any new podcasts / film downloads copied across automatically.

"Now here's something really cool: a third-party application that turns your Apple iPhone (including the new 3G model) or iPod Touch into a universal remote control for your entire home entertainment system.

Air remote is Apple-approved and can be used to operate your TV, Sky TV box, DVD player, iTunes and as part of an AMX or Crestron control system. It's due to be launched as a download from iTunes in July, at a cost of $99.

The system can also be used as part of an AMX or Crestron control system and will give full control of lighting and blind systems, as well as digital media libraries. It can even be used with the Kaleidescape multiroom movie system.

The interface uses Apple's touch-screen technology and the on-screen menu resembles that of Sky TV. You can just flick the screen to change channels on the TV, or adjust the volume.

If you download Air remote from the iTunes App Store, you can set it up to control a simple music and TV set-up yourself, with no programming required. More complex installations will need to be undertaken by a custom install specialist.

Air remote will also sell an optional IR extender to use with the system for £100."

Now that sounds Cool..

Crestron Control *dribble*

I was thinking of a similar app.. something like a Logitech Harmony, but with the iPhone. It appears that's exactly the same, except it's £99 :(
