So I am a little bored. In my journey through the LCD jungle I have kept some of my many backlightbleed photos:

NEC 20wgx2pro:

Samsung 226bw:

HP w2207:

HP w2207h:

OcUK Value L2442WD-VA 24":

HP lp2475w:

Be kind these photos have cost me something like 160£ in pure loss

Hp seems a lot better than all the others.

Yeah that was one of the areas where it did well.

Still one of the best TN's around if you ask me. That is if you get a "lucky" sample. I tried 3 times. However I couldn't live with the color difference of the top and bottom of the screen + TN viewing angles.

Backlight bleed is the 'Norm' with a vast majority of TFT's and does not concern me that much. My 2043BW has backlight bleed but it does not show other than when i am booting into windows etc. Normal PC work / gaming is no problem!

I love how people make excuses for shoddy build quality. Just look at those pictures and imagine you're watching a 2.35:1 movie with the large black bars and seeing that mess, or any movie with lots of dark scenes in it, or a game that's largely dark.

nightrhyme, when I first got my NEC 20WMGX2 that back light bleed you had is 100% identical to how mine looked. But it went away after a few weeks... completely. I have absolutely zero blb now. How that happened I'm still not sure though.

I actually had it for 5 weeks and it didn't change. I had it replaced by NEC with a speciment that was even worse. In the end what bothered me the most was the way it was unable to show dark shades below RGB(10,10,10).

I lost 100£ on the ordeal alone *lol*

But looking back the 20wgx2pro was actually the monitor I liked the most :)

Hmm, guess I just got lucky with my NEC. I still have mine and I'm considering the Hazro HZ24Wi as a replacement. Really hoping they have all the issues fixed when they start shipping in the US soon.

Although it has a lot to live up to. Even after 2.5 years people still comment on the great image quality.

no exif data makes baby jesus cry:(

THATS a more representative photo of backlight bleed. its very easy to completely over-expose a photo and say 'omg its so bad!!!'

Nope it isn't. IMHO it's in fact misleading as this isn't what it looks like to the naked eye.

All my images were taken wit the same camera (canon A85 4 megapixels) in the same location with the same exposure in total darkness. And the images were not postprocessed. Just resized and cropped. This was actually the way it looked in total darkness

rubbish. that is exactly how mine looks to my eye.

if your DGM looked like this:

ocuk-1.jpg

then you have serious problems. and while you say they were all taken at the same exposure, that exposure could still be far too long. take a photo of a monitor displaying a large portion of black with an image in the middle of the screen at those same settings and i GARANTEE the image in the middle will be over-exposed which in turn kicks up that black level far higher than it would be IRL

I'm happy for you, that your OcUK is able to display that deep black :)
It's almost Pioneer kuro like ;)

Just imagining what my HP lp2475w blacklevel looks like through your eyes makes me drool

Sorry couldn't help myself

Back on topic
I want debate with you as you seem pretty set. I'll just say that I have always found the way review sites shoot backlight misrepresenting.
I'm no professionel photographer nor is my cam that good. But I am certainly able to compare my photo to what my eyes perceive and this is pretty damn close.
Remember I view and photograph in total darkness. And I mean complete darkness...

you can reply like that if you wish, OR you can try what i said. ......... there is no way on earth it they look like that unless every monitor youve used has been faulty. just taking a random colour sample of that image of yours as an example - #211c22. you are suggesting that your monitor is incabable of displaying anything much below that point, which is cobblers.

lets look at my sony 40w2000

kdl-40w2000%20backlight_1.JPG

i intentionally over-exposed that photo to show up the slight unevenness of the backlight in my set. its STILL nowhere near as bas as some of yours and look how bad the osd looks in the top left corner...... does it look like that in real life? no it doesnt. i will not pretend my dgm or sony are anywhere near perfect, indeed if you can be bothered to search you'll see i dont have a much to praise them about as far as black levels go, but your photos way over the top.

Hmm...

You actually made me make my room completely dark again and view fullscreen black and compare it to my picture :D

The picture without a shadow of a doubt is a realistic representation of the way my eyes percieve the backlight ;)

I just had a look at my OcUK 24" VA in the dark and have to agree that the picture in the OP is pretty accurate. I have to admit that the backlight bleed is pretty bad, but its still a great panel for the price (well the price it was for).

I agree. OcUK was an amazing monitor for the price. I just couldn't live with the excessive brightness. It burned out my eyes.

I actually didn't find the bleed to bad.

OP ?
