Hot on the heels of the Alan wake trailer for the 17th October I saw this today.

The first details on Eidos Montreal's Deus Ex 3 have been revealed, in the pages of PC Zone's landmark 200th issue.

It's out in the shops on Thursday, but PC Zone subscribers are reporting that copies of PCZ number 200 have hit doormats this morning. The cover game? Deus Ex 3 - the long-awaited return of the world's favourite nano-augmented RPG-shooter.

In essence, it looks and sounds fantastic. The art direction is a beautiful meld of the renaissance and cyberpunk (tying into the game's Leonardo Da Vinci motif) and is going for a lot more stylised look than the sort of game that comes from the Unreal Engine cookie-cutter.

It sounds like Eidos Montreal isn't leaving anything to chance; a "powerful, layered" plot is promised for the third game - which has been confirmed as a prequel set in 2027- and the dev has even drafted in the consultative talents of original writer Sheldon Pacotti, while also gaining the blessing of both Harvey Smith and Warren Spector on the project.

You're cast as average joe Adam Jensen, who works as a private security officer at a technology lab specialising in biomechanical augmentations, a forerunner to the sort of nanotechnology shown in the original Deus Ex. One day the path of his life is unexpectedly altered as a team of black ops commandos break into his company's HQ, and using a security plan from Jensen's own hand, a mass slaughter ensues and the conspiracy begins.

"Deus Ex 3's vision of the future sees holographic screens flicker atop ferries moving back and forth in front of the Shanghai skyline, now split into two layers with the rich on the top and the poor in perpetual twilight below," says PCZ.

Eidos Montreal says it's more than aware of fan reaction to controversial second game, Invisible War, and promises mistakes, such as limiting ammo types to just one, won't be repeated.

This said, they are doing their utmost to please newcomers as well as existing fans. Perhaps controversially this time around combat won't be influenced by stats, but will rely purely on your personal marksmanship skills. Instead stats will influence "a vast array of fully upgradeable and customisable weapons", and you'll be able to tailor your arsenal to your play style with mag upgrades, scopes and other add-ons.

What's more, stealth will now rely on a cover system rather than shadows, and damage will be dealt with by a very Call of Duty-style auto-heal. There's probably going to be some debate over those two.

Augmentations have been bumped up and sound fantastic. 20 have been promised for the final game, ranging from 'bungee jump' tentacles that shoot from your back and anchor to a wall when you jump off a building, and the ability to punch through walls to grab enemies in neighbouring rooms.

Deus Ex 3 certainly sounds very, very promising - if a little controversial for die-hard PC fans. And just wait until you see the shots...

For more info and the first screenshots see the full ten-page preview in the 200th issue of PC Zone, out October 9 (and in subscribers' hands now). Happy 200th issue, by the way.

Not sure what i think about the changes but have to give it a chance.

If it has a cover system then it's going to be third person, and therefore it's going to suck balls.

Oh well :(

Rainbow Six Vegas managed a passable cover system in an FPS, just moving to third person when you are locked against cover.
Im going to try and stay possitive over the game, It will never match Deus EX 1 but It will probably turn out to be reasonably good.

pre-scripted cover positions = fail =/

auto-heal = fail =|

no combat stats = fail =\

Oh dear...

They need to think "outside the box" a bit more it sounds like...3rd-person cover system? That's lame...This isn't Gears of War for the 360, this is DEUS FREAKING EX 3 FOR THE PC.

Good grief, listen to the nerd rage in this thread. How DARE they mess with DX cannon?!?!?11one

I'm going to give it a chance. Some of those augs sound pretty cool, but I wonder how they're going to justify having better/more advanced augs in the prequel than they had in the original. As for the cover thing - Mass Effect had that sort of thing and it wasn't a terrible game by any stretch of the imagination.

I, for one, am really looking forward to this. :D

What a load of balls. They say they've taken on board what people said about the second yet it sounds like they've moved even further away from the original. It's going to suck harder than a prom date

If any IP universe could pull off regenerating health it's Deus Ex. Nanobots gradually fixing your body as you go? Not exactly unfeasible.

The auto heal is a bit dodgy, I'll admit. The basic tactic will be to just hide behind a wall until you've regained enough health to jump out again. It MIGHT work if the AI doesn't suck. By that, I mean your enemies have to be aggressive enough to follow you behind that wall, thus preventing that lame tactic.

Well the 1st had healing, admittidley it was a aug you had a choice over, if thats how they do it again i cant see it being a bad thing.
However it does seem they have long lost the RPG aspect of the origonal :(

The thing is that aug had to be powered by bioelectric cells, which were in relatively limited supply. The description does say "Call of Duty style"...

I'm not sure what to make of this overall.

Yes, god forbid that fans of the first game in a series would want a sequel to be in a similar vein. That makes no sense whatsoever

The auto heal is a weird one I give you all that but it didn't stop crysis or COD 4 being poor FPS so I am willing to say that it's not really a bad idea.

As soon as I read the words third person in the preview I sort of felt let down. But if it's only when using cover or doing "special actions" I can live with that as it worked in the last theif game and it worked in Riddick. Would be good if they gave an option to disable it thou, and have all the actions performed like in the crysis cutscenes or like in mirrors edge.

In the preview four aug's are meationed they are

Claymore -A last resort when facing insurmountable odds, Jensen's body can emit thousands of high-velocity miniture beads that can assail enemies.

Multi-Kill - When faced with multiple opponents, Jensen can unleash a combo of devastating martial arts moves, with the action switching to third-person.

Bungee Jump - Hurl yourself off the edge of a building and tentacles will shoot out of your back and anchor themselves to the wall slowing your fall.

Wall Punch - Can be used in conjunction with visual augmentation. Spy an enemy on the other side of a wall then punch through it, grah him and snap his neck.

Now they sound pretty good and the bungee jump aug makes me think the world maybe an open sandbox. The combat not being based on stats is a bit of a weird choice I though it worked well in the orginal with the characters aim being more precise and steady the more they upgraded those stats.
