A news-story at TechPowerUp! web-site suggests that ATI is about to release code-named ATI RV790 graphics processing unit (GPU) that will be a redesigned version of the code-named RV770 chip – which powers ATI Radeon HD 4800-series graphics boards – capable of running at considerably higher clock-speeds than 750MHz

From what I gather its to have more shaders, and core-clocks in excess of 900mhz.

Should do.
But taking into account the delays we've been told to expect for G200b, ATI may decide to release their new GPU at the same time for competition.

Or release them before nvidia putting another boot into them and taking more market share which would be the best move for Ati why release at same time if they can get theirs out earlier. Also wonder if there will be a new X2 variant as that could be a serious improvement if they have managed to srt xfire out a little more which i would expect them to have done.

I think ATI would only do that if they wanted to help nvidia out. I think that's only likely if ATI are in a potential monopoly position, which they aren't.

Also, ATI is AMD. AMD's CPU side is doing badly, so they need the GPU side (i.e. ATI) to do as well as possible.

If G200b and RV790 are on a par (and they both actually exist) and if ATI can get RV790 out several months earlier, that's several months of gaining market share and/or higher profit margins.

The only reason I can see for ATI imposing an artificial delay on RV790 is if RV8xx is not on the horizon and ATI want to keep something "new" to release before then.

I ordered a 4870 at the weekend, its due tommorow. Nice news to wake upto that its already out of date :p

Good job no games will actually use that much power yet, without a good 30" screen :p

So how good is this new chip going to be approximately?

50% more than a 4870? seeings as the new cards due mid next year are usually 80-100% better then these refreshes should be at least 40% quicker.. or not.

Nice find - I didn't think ATi had anything on the way until late Q1 '09 at the earliest.

Might pick one of these up depending on price/performance.

Lol i should have known this would happen as i have a knack of finally buying something just as it is being updated and will be better but i am still happy with my X2. Good luck to them if they can get this out quickly and further increase their sales and market share because that can only be good for us consumers having a competitive vibrant market even if it is still only two makers.

You know that when the next generation launches the previous generation's cards don't suddenly stop working? :p

The 4870X2, for all it's problems, is a really impressive card, enjoy it. :)

Yes i do know that Tute thx lol but i am just saying always sods law i hold off thinking thats it for a bit then along comes something as soon as i get my new bit. I am completely happy with my X2 and see that being the case for quite a while but if i had known about this i would have waited.

i guess they though why we cant play nvidia game. 900core sounds good if it could just overclock to 1 ghz would be insane, more shaders same tactic as maxcore. they probably preparing to fight 270/290.

i guess we in such time that gpu are release more frequently then u can change socks.

just interested how they going to deal with heat issue
