4870 vs 8800GTX power consumption?

Does anybody know if the 4870 uses less than an 8800GTX? I used to run one on my 500W Akasa fine but it was pushing it a bit most likely, does the 4870 use more or less than the 8800GTX?

Also would the 1GB version use much more power than the 512?

Thanks

with the latest gen of card that not the case... all nvidia and ATi have done is put together decent(ish) spec graphic cards and then made them so you have to pump volts in to get a decent level of performance... if you look at the specs especially with nv they haven't rly done much to the cards (bar shrink the process which doesn't have as much affect on gfx processors then on cpu's)

say what?

R600 had 320SP...RV770 has 800SP....

G80 had 128SP, GT200 has 192-240SP...

In the case of R600 vs R770, power consumption has gone down....

In the case of G80 vs GT200, power consumption has gone up, but processing power has gone up much more.

Just because hardware is getting smaller and more efficient doesn't mean power consumption will be less. At the same performance level yes...but that's not the point.

You'd have thought the 8800GTX would use more being an old design, but apparently not

The GTX figures are on these graphs

4870 here

According to them graphs I'm a good 130-40W away from reaching the limit on my 12V rails and they are using a Quad, good stuff. :D

Thanks, guess I got my facts mixed up when I thought the GTX was pushing my PSU's limits. :o

According to this graph which shows power consumption of the actual cards only, the GTX and 4870 use a very similar amount of power.

See here at post #4.
