On the road....
I am getting the above STOP error with Windows after a re-install of Windows XP, after a bit of digging, it appears my 8800GTS is stuck in an infinite loop.

I have 181.22 drivers, on installing them, I simply get a black screen on boot up (after the XP loading screen), the CD drives spool and my startup sound plays as normal.

If I start in safe mode, or, remove the drivers, the PC works fine albeit minus 3D acceleration.

Any ideas?

I have an ASRock 4CoreDual SATA2 Mobo, 2GB DDR 667, 8800GTS 320MB, XFi Soundcard.

Prior to my re-install, the pc was extremely slow & un-responsive hence the re-install - tbh I wish I'd left it alone now!:o

Make sure you have updated to atleast SP2 (I think you only need an updated .net for ATI but give that a whirl to) before installing nVidia drivers you might need to install an older version like 17x.xx and then install 180s over the top.

Dunno about the Sp2 thing but I never install over drivers, I always remove every trace before a new install, 180s included.

SP2 is included on the CD of my version of XP, I recall the .Net thing with ATI but never had to use it with Nvidia.....

I've found my "Point of View" driver disk, lets see if this works.....

Ta. :)

When I was building my media server I had to update SP2 from windows update properly before the nVidia drivers would "take" - otherwise I'd either bootup to 4bit 640x480 color or alternativly a BSOD but not sure what error it was.

I've found with newer nVidia drivers they seem to assume your updating rather than installing from scratch :|

Thats interesting, I'll give update a try (although Automatic Update is on & downloading as I type) I tried the driver CD with no avail.

Next, I slapped my old 6800Ultra back in and guess what? - Same issue! - at least the 8800 isn't borked!

I think your onto something here Rroff although I have never previously had to install earlier drivers, I'll go & check out Windows update & report back.

Cheers for the help. :)

That motherboard there could very well be the reason. The Geforce 8 series has much troubles running on this board due to the BIOS on the videocard itself. Basically you will have to flash it with a different one and all should hopefully work fine afterwards. Unless you have a second PC with PCIE graphics slot, then this may prove difficult to do.

Unfortunately thats all I really know about this matter after reading around, but you can make a post in the dedicated ASRock 4CoreDual SATA2 thread over at AnandTech. It is the best place to go to concerning everything about this particular motherboard and so hopefully you will get help there.

Have you tried it without the X-Fi?

I had STOP issues and bluescreens with the creative drivers and olnly fixed the problem by using the You-Pax modded drivers

Cheers for the reply - I know that thread well! :D

The puzzling thing is the card & board have more or less worked happily since I bought them a good 6 months or more ago,I'm sure you can appreciate whilst I see what your saying, there is indeed issues with the 8 series, but, according to ASRock, not the 8800GTS 320 which I have, I'm sure you see my confusion.

As I have said, I've tried my 6800Ultra PCi-e and thats doing the same thing.

This seems to have reared its head since the re-install, I may well try another install.

I'm wondering if perhaps I should bite the bullet & lose the Music etc? - Perhaps a Format would cure it? I'm reluctant to lose so much data and probably still be in the same boat. :(

I have had issues with the XFi and the Audigy 2 that preceeded it,I'd thought a recent driver update had sorted it - I was getting glitches in Battlefield 2 that I thought was the GFX card, it turned out to be the Creative cards.

It looks like its back to on board sound? - I'll rip it out & try again.

Yeah the X-Fi is another problem - never caused STOP errors on this board but did on my old nForce board unless I updated both the creative drivers and software package to latest version. Also had a problem where the whole PC would go very slow and eventually crash which was sorted by updating the creative software.

Well, the problem is persisting with either on board or, the XFi sound card installed, I'm downloading the You-Pax drivers, and will see if this helps.

I'm getting a little progress, the problem arises regardless of sound (i.e. on board or Xfi) and regardless of 6800Ultra or 8800GTS Graphics card installed.

Battlefield 2, for example, runs fine for a few minutes, then the sound crashes, followed by the game going back to desktop a few minutes later.

At least the STOP errors seem to have ceased!

I am now starting to think the ASRock Motherboard I have is pants were it not for my mate having virtually the same rig as me (Board, RAM but a 7300 Card) - his works just great.

This is SERIOUSLY doing my head in! :o:(
