Any suggestions on gpu's for a new high-end rig?

It's been about four years since i built my last pc and i'm finally getting round to putting together a new one over the next few weeks. Rather than updating continuously i prefer to go for a top-of-the-range upgrade after a prolonged period.

I've decided to jump into the i7 platform with a 920, 6gb Corsair Dominator 1600mhz, Antec 1200, Asus Rampage II and a Geforce 295. However, i'm not too familiar with 295 vendors and looking for any input. BFG seem to be popular and they're also a tad cheaper than the others, yet the more expensive EVGA is on offer this week taking it under the price of the BFG.

Would it be worth getting an EVGA card while they're on offer and is there much, if any, difference between all the 295 cards? Also would a 750W psu be enough for this setup, or would it be wiser to go for 1000W?

Thanks :p

750W from a good brand would be more than enough.

I think both BFG and EVGA are reputable brands, but not having had to deal with either of them I can't say for sure.

For PSUs? I personally use Corsair, as do a lot of people (though a few HX620s have being going pop lately.. not sure exactly how serious this issue is). Zalman are reputedly very good, so are Tagan I believe. Anything made by Seasonic would be a decent bet.

Hmmm, at the moment im using an old Enermax and my pc keeps power tripping and has broken 2 hard drives so far. Not sure which componenet is causing the problem, but assume its my PSU - one of the main reasons im getting a new pc. I thought Enermax were pretty reputable but not so sure now.

For a PSU I'd reccomend Corsair, OCZ or Gigabyte Odin.

OCZ don't have quite as tight power characteristics when pushed close to the edge (over ~70% load) but I don't reccomend pushing any PSU that hard anyhow so imo its a moot point. If you keep the load within reasonable limits they are as reliable or more reliable than either of the other 2 imo. I've always gone for OCZ and bought 100watt higher than I needed with the above in mind and its served me very well so far.

On the Seasonic PSU reviews someone mentioned that they dont come with an 8-pin adaptor. If im looking to power a 295 wont i need one that has both a 6 and 8-pin?

For the GPU go with whichever brand offers you the best package, be it warrenty or accessories. They are all made at the same place anyway.

I recommend Silverstone PSU's. Never had a hiccup with them but they are a tad expensive. Gigabyte Odin's are quite good too. Stay clear of Enermax and Hiper imo.
