Right as most of you know, I've been looking for the a car for the past 6 months, trying to work out what car would be best for me, and again, as a lot of you know, I decided on a BMW e36 328i. It fits the bill for what I want really, is comfy for long journeys, is fun in the twisties, has plenty of power, has room for modifications (both cosmetic and performance) and is generally a huge upgrade from anything I've had before.

It took me ages to find cars, despite everyone on the e36 forums (and indeed these) saying that there are loads of them about at all price ranges, there really aren't. I was looking to spend around £1500 on the car, but was happy to go higher for the right car.

I found a decent saloon in Cambridge, which sold just as I turned up, and I also found a very decent condition, speced and priced coupé near Guildford, but that sold before I cold view it.

After those two cars I'd decided fully on a coupé, and then realised they are few and far between for unmolested examples below £2500, that being said, I found a car in Coventry that didn't have all the options I was after, but was completely stock and very nicely priced.

-westy- and I viewed it a couple of weeks ago and it had a slipping clutch which wasn't good, but everything else appeared to be fine. We (mostly -westy- :p) haggled with the seller about the clutch and basically said we'd take it for £500 below asking with it as-is, although it's quite dangerous to drive the way it is, or they could fit a new clutch and we'd take it at asking. The guy really didn't like the idea of knocking down the price, especially that much, and so he agreed to do the clutch.

Fast forward to Thursday this week and we picked it up, and then the stone made a pretty pattern in the windscreen on the way back. Which is being sorted at some point this morning.

Now then, more about the car. I picked it up for £1100 and it's a 1995 e36 328i on an N plate in Montreal/Monaco Blue. It does not have leather or AC (fail I know), but both of these shouldn't cost too much to sort (if I buy the parts and fit them myself). This may seem stupid to most people (Fox etc.) but the way I see it is this...spend £1100 on the car, £100-£200 on leather, £300 on AC bits and the car is exactly how I want it, for ~£1600. Now when looking for cars I'd need £2000+ to get a car in this condition with leather and AC, so I've made a saving. I'm also not sure I do need or want AC, it was more, if the car has it that's great, else, I've not had it, it's not a big deal I can live without it.
It has a couple of spots of rust on the arches, but they'll be sorted soon.

It has style 42s on at the moment, and is also tangoed, currently I'm in two minds about detangoing it, but I probably will.

Now the part everyone wants and is skipping straight to...

Errr retrofitting AC isn't a simple or easy job..

I know what's involved and it is a lot of work, but as I don't need the car every day it's not a big deal to rip apart the interior and engine bay. But as I also said, it wasn't a "I must have" requirement, it was a "It'd be nice to have" one. :)

Great buy - £1,100 is a steal.

With that colour I would definitely de-tango it. I did my e36 a couple of weeks back - mainly for the rear lights which look so much better clear. I didn't really want to do the sides or fronts (I still think orange front indicators look better on the red cars) but everything has to match.

Aircon wouldn't bother me unless I was commuting in it. It's really not worth the extra hassle or weight :p. Depends what you use the car for though.

www.e36coupe.com is a good forum for these cars and usually have a lot or bits for sale in the classifieds section.

With the dark blue clear all round is the way to go. As a guide, you'll be looking at £50-70 for rears, £15 for fronts, £10 for sides. Be careful to get coupe ones and be careful to get the right side indicators (they were later facelifted).

I bought a cloth Sport interior for £100, and sold my old cloth SE interior for £100. Definitely get a set of sport seats - they are much better for longer journeys as well as driving hard. Leather ones aren't much more, budget around £200-250 as they've come down in price a lot in the last 6 months.

Wider and flatter side strips designed for the sport and M models just clips onto these and smarten up the side appearance. £50 for a set usually second hand.

I'd stick with those wheels, but do get a 4 wheel alignment done on a Hunter machine. Your rear camber looks well out (look at the picture of my rear wheel above). The car will handle much better afterwards - best £90 I've spent on mine. Also get a decent set of tyres - I'm runnign Michelin PS2s on mine.

Do you know if it has the Nikasil or Alusil engine? Shouldn't be a problem either way now, but you will have to take a bit more care of it if it's still got the Nikasil block.

Hope you have fun with it :)

Don't agree on buying one without A/C and having intentions of retrofitting it...

but

On the plus side, you've got a great car for an absolutely silly price! As you say, plenty of power and great handling too - enjoy it! Looks to be in very good condition. How many miles has it done? (Sold my last E36, a 323i at just shy of 180,000 mls and there was absolutely nothing wrong with it). Get yourself on ebay and start hunting out the leather sport interiors!!

I forgot to put mileage in the OP. :p

It's done a huge ()...169K. Mileage doesn't bother me really, the car is sound and has been looked after by BMW Worx most of it's life.

Nick - I'm on the forums already, have been for a while whilst researching the car. :)

When browsing ebay I've found leather is quite expensive and looks tatty, but Sport Half Leather is cheap and looks good, so will most likely go for that. Also spotted all the light bits on ebay for around £60 all in, from various sources. :)

The car is currently parked on an uneven slope, so that could be why the camber looks out. Will get it checked though, and I'll also be getting some decent tyres (what are good in 225/50 R16?) because it has Infinity on the rear which don't grip on greasy roads too well as I found out when I put the back end out when bringing it home.

As I say, AC isn't an issue, and I won't be using the car much, so will probably just save the £300 or so and a week or two of my time by leaving it. :)

It has the Alusil block. :)

Oh nice - BMWorx do the work on my cars too.

Bridgestone Potenza RE050a's are going to be your best bet on those wheels. Probably worth getting all 4 and a 4 wheel alignment done sooner rather than later.

I'd go for sport half leather over leather too I think.

Looking good, get it detangoed though, looks terrible like that. Liking the alloys and definitely get yourself a sport interior as I know you like a hoon or 2 :D

wait till the summer and then see if its a "nice to have" :p

:p

I've had 3 cars without AC during the summer, whilst it is warm it's not that big a deal, not in this country anyway. :)

Am I the only idiot who rarely sees the benefit in de-tango'ing? :(

Depends on the car I think. I mean I don't mind mine having orange stuff, but clear looks so much better...

And robnut's car in this thread.

Nice one Rob! :D

As has been said, definitely de-tango it. Leather seats would be a nice addition in the future. I like the wheels, similar to the MG Hairpins I had fitted on mine previously.

Nice car, but imo the saloon looks better than the coupe, 2 doors on a bmw looks wrong imo :(. For 1100 quid I'd love to get one like that though.

non sport, lacking options, not the nicest alloys.

surely there was better than that around?

\o/ Someone finally posted a put down.

From what I could find, at £1500, no, there wasn't. There may have been on ebay, but I could only view on the weekends, and will not buy without seeing a car, so most ads were out of the question. Especially as a lot of the ebay ones were modified in some way or other.
