im going to biuld a pc soon (ish) but i dunno what to do. i have two options.
1 biuld one in june with a £600 budget
2 force down anti depresants to stop me comiting suicede untill christmas nd biulding it then for £800ish

i want it for gaming so it needs to good enough to run games in 1900X1200 and well. i also want it to last for a long time. (although not in max settings.) im thinking of going for an Ii7 rig as that should be the most upgradable. i dont know much about this though so any advice is verry welcome.
 
i cant buy anything atm because my parents wont let me buy it. they think it will distract me from my GCSE's. (and it will). but they finish in june and my birthday is in jully. are manufacturors going to keep producing upgrades for non i7 systems for a long time?
 
i5 Will be out Q3 this year, (the same core as i7 but with dual channel memory rather than tri so the motherboards and RAM are cheaper).

Good exam results can help justify a more expensive reward! When I was in your position, I waited well over 2 years for a new setup and I have to say the performance was well worth it compared to if I had just settled for a lower budgeted system.

Trust me, the wait will be over much quicker if you focus on your studies.
 
he meant that the i5 platform (designed to replace intels current mid range chips) will be out in Q3 (which is marketing lingo for autumn)

so yeah, the advantage is going to be that it's cheaper than the i7's but with a slight reduction in features (for example the i5 will only support dual channel memory while the i7 has triple channel support amongst other things)

To be honest, for gaming in the £600-800 region I would reccomend the new phenom II chip's I'll try and put together a spec for both prices for you.
 
thanks. wouldnt a normal quadcore be just as good and much cheaper though? also thinkingg about this ill be at uni in 2 years and have no money, space, insurance or anything necisary to maintain a decent pc so it realy just has to last me till then. so maybe 17 isnt the way to go. and i was only waiting till crimbo because i thought there wuld be an i7 price drop so it looks like a normal pc for £600ish

Heh, if you want to maintain a bleeding edge PC, you'll find a way :) I'm still a student, and look at my specs :D :)
 
hummm. dosnt that depend on the game? i know some cant us all cores and things but surely then its best to go single core? whats a good xaple of a gaming core?

from what i've heard the tri-core phenoms can reach around 4Ghz on air :eek: with a decent cooler like that scythe, so there may be no need to go for water cooling just yet (also space is perhaps a little tight in the antec 300 case for water cooling so you may want to look at a slightly bigger case more suited to housing all the reserviours and rediators/pumps etc that you need to cram in.)

So really there's probably little need for WC but hey if you want to, go for it, just make sure you also include the graphics card in the water loop as the 4870 should also overclock well underwater.
 
for what its worth, my spec is much lower than that one (I'm doing my A levels so cash is scarce) and I still get crysis going at 40 fps at 1600x1200 on high.
 
cheers. waterblocks look quite reasonably priced so i think i will as a precaution. no point frying a £150 cpu for the sake of a £30 waterblock.
EDIT: corection. fans are reasonable. watercooling looks scary :( . i might miss that out for a bit. maybe overclock later, thanks

yeah. that is realy good for the price. ill look into overclocking and cooling e.c.t more. it loks cheaper to buy a better core (but then overclocking is pointless). i am a little worried about how it will handle 1900 x 1200 graphics but i dont mind low graphics. (my current pc only has a 125 biult in card and at the moment im getting about 1fps on games on lowest settings. not fun.)
 
well I have a friend with a similar spec to the one above (except he uses one of the old tri cor phenoms so the above spec is slightly better)

eh manages a minimum of 30 fps on crysis at 1900x1200 with all settings maxxed, and we all Know how power-hungry crysis is, should have no problem with any current game at that resolution.
 
I would suggest the amd tri-core 720 black for cpu on budget. Its am3 socket so you can use ddr3 memory later on if you decide to upgrade your board. Also it has unlocked multipliers and can easily overclock to 4ghz on air. Plus it's a tri-core so you can play games and run programs that utilize multiple cores faster and more efficiently. If GTA IV is one of the games you plan on playing, sorry, a dual core will not cut it. So I agree with the amd 720!!!!!!!
