Hey guys,

Just bought a l4d server, but having trouble getting it to work properly. Basically i want it to work via lobby, ie you set up lobby like normal and whats supposed to happen is:

you set sv_search_string "x" on the server, and then in console as lobby leader sv_search_string "x", and it should jump straight into your server.

It doesnt.

Any ideas how to get this bit to work? Really annoying me

Cheers

Tom.

Not sure about how to do that but you can easily connect directly to the server via IP and then just add it to your favourite servers and use the server browser to select it every time until you get it working as intended

yea i can do that, but it's no good for setting up proper games :( really want it to work with the lobby

I'd be interested in this as well and any other general hints, tips, help on setting up and running one. We recently got multiplay to add l4d to our server and apart from getting it running I haven't done much with it and am also having trouble getting that search string to work.

Another odd thing is that for a while two of our clan/steam group members had a thing pop up on the main menu telling them about our Steam group's server, but they no longer see it and I never have.

I have a fair bit of experience with our BF2 server but the source server stuff I've never dealt with.

I think the server cannot be password protected. You have to make it so only certain groups can enter + friends.....I think thats how we got ours to work anyway.

rG-Tom, just put this in "server.cfg" :

\\Set Search key on Server
sv_search_key TOMPWNZLOL

That will set your key to TOMPWNZLOL :) Obviously set it to anything you want ;) Then when in a lobyy with friends, type: sv_search_Key TOMPWNZLOL in console, return and then click "start game" in the GUI menu. Should load your server up straight away.

Friend got a server recently, tbh there isn't a great deal you need to do with LFD as once in lobby and then in game everything is pretty much taken care for you.

Install sourcemod if you can, always useful to tinker about with and try and get HLSW so you can monitor your server/issue remote commands.

I'm still waiting for a copy of the server.cfg from Aekeron but in all honesty don't need it. THe most important thing is getting the search key as the server will configure itself to the lobby game when you use the key and join.

Hope that helps!

I used to own a server but got rid of it since it didnt work as i hoped. I basically wanted to have the server there for our games, and it changes the settings based on what we chose in the lobby, instead of me having to manually keep changing maps, difficulty and what not via HLSW. Is this what were supposed to do or was there a way of config'in it to work like i wanted ?

Thats the best thing; leave it on a private server (it the basic sv_lobby 0 in a basic unedited server.cfg).

Add a search key to your server.cfg (see above).

This is how OcUK games operate off multiple servers and it works all gravey. You don't even really need admin in game if you are with 4/8 friends. Just play whateverm, then leave when you're done!

yea, they've broken this with 1.0.1.2, 1.0.1.3 is just out now so ill try it with that now :) I got it working with sv_cheats 1 and ms_force_dedicated_server in the end, but not ideal as it still lets randoms join the server, which is really annoying as at peak time it fills the second you turn it on :|

If you've got "sv_search_key blahblahblah" set (and no password/etc) then you shouldn't have this issue.

I really recommend posting your config with the passwords stripped out so I can critique for you.

you need to set in your server.cfg
sv_search_key "keyhere"

and before connecting put in console sv_search_key keyhere without the "" and it should work perfectly, but as said maybe best posting all your config as some server commands to disable the sv_search_key feature, like a password and steam group exclusive.

Edit:
Here is a copy of one of mine

hostname "#rsiftw [07] - Left 4 Dead Private Server - www.RSIFTW.co.uk"
rcon_password "---"

// Server Cvars
mp_disable_autokick 1
sv_voiceenable 1
sv_alltalk 0
sv_contact "[email protected]"
sv_downloadurl ""
sv_pure 2

// Lan or internet play, Server region cvars
sv_lan 0
sv_region 3

// Server Logging
sv_log_onefile 1
sv_logbans 1
sv_logecho 0
sv_logfile 1
sv_logflush 0
sv_logsdir "logs"

sv_tags "rsiftw"
sv_search_key "keyhere"
sv_steamgroup 707923
sv_allow_lobby_connect_only 1

I ha the same problem, what I do is use the ms_force command i.e.

ms_force_dedicated_server 83.142.49.22:28011

the ip is te ip of my server, put that but with your ip in the console whilst people are joiing ya lobby and it will work fine as long as a server is empty at the time.
