I upgraded from an HD2900 to a 4850 XXX.

Yesterday I updated L4D for this new patch, and now it won't run.
I havent run it since I upgraded the card, so I don't know if its the change of card or the update thats done it, but now when I try to launch the game it doesn't start, I instantly get a windows error message.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Things Ive tried:

Reboot.
Verify game cache (twice).
Update GFX drivers.
Verify game cache again...
More reboots.
delete local content, delete remaining files and re install.
More reboots and verifying :(
Delete steamregistry.blob file thing from main steam folder and restart steam.

Are there any config files that I might have to clear?

What does the windows error message say?

"has encountered an error and needs to die"

And asks if I want to debug it. (VS installed).

I really don't want to put the old card in, I can't imagine the content update has done it so I'm pretty sure its the new card.

So lets assume it is, anything else I can try?

can't see why your so against putting the other card back in, remove the new gfx card from the equation in one go.

have you tried removing from steam and re downloading.

Firs thing you should do when switching cards... remove the old drivers and reinstall the new ones. Even if it's the same version of driver!

The old card was watercooled, so would have to also reinstall the waterloop and check for leaks and so on and so forth. I am more inclined to try simple software fixes such as deleting config files first, if they all fail then that will be my route.

yes, thats in the list I posted of things ive tried :)

try launching it with -autoconfig

delete everything in the steam folder but steamapps, steam.exe, boot it up

check security software

Security software hasnt changed, but will have a look. Thanks for other tips :) Will try that.

I did this :) Thanks.

Have you ran memory checking/cpu checking utils to make sure there isn't something else wrong with your setup? The new card may draw slightly more juice, making a previous clock speed unstable (even if you're not overclocked).

I know it's a long shot but as you've tried so many things, perhaps worth looking at :)

Reinstall directx if you have not done so already. Also check the details on the error, It should tell ou something in the application event log.

I assume you've done a fresh catalyst driver install since swapping the two cards out?

Yes. I uninstalled all the ati gubbins before removing the old card.

Aekeron, I would have thought that would crash the game somewhere later than launch, but worth a try! :)

Wizz, can you actually uninstall directx? Never tried that.

And have you tried any other games?

First thing I thought of....... this morning after getting to work :o
Can't believe in hindsight I didnt try this, was only after a colleague mentioned "source" that it smacked me in the face :p

I ran rainbow six fine, so steam in general seems ok, and some other steam games, but none source.

Will try as soon as im home and post the result.

Thank you all for brainstorming so far, greatly appreciated.
