When we went into winter and put the hard top on the mx5 we knew that a new soft top would be required as the old one had split and therefore was no longer water tight.

Upon removal of the hard top:

I'd seen many recommendations for mazmania at Knutsford so decided to give the a call.

We weren't actually sure whether to go for another vinyl roof or upgrade to the mohair. Peter of Mazmania answered all my questions on the phone and said when we brought the car in we could look at the two and decide what we wanted.

We arranged to arrive at 12pm and took a look at both of the offerings. Having inspected both the vinyl and mohair we decided that we liked the look of the mohair. Costs where £425 for vinyl and £449 for the mohair (fully fitted, £100 less if you wanna DIY!)

Peter then took my wife and I into Knutsford town centre to get some lunch whilst his colleague began to dismantle the old roof.

After a couple of hours having a wonderful relaxing lunch at Gusto Peter called to say that it was all ready and he was coming back to get us!

After the short trip back to mazmania we where really pleased with the new hood which looked really good. Peter explained and showed me that the tensioner cables needed replacing when they did the hood and for £10 each it was a good investment as the old ones had become brittle and rusted.

Unfortunately the weather was a bit changeable so we set off with the roof up. Thankfully about 20 mins down the road the sun came out so we dropped the top for the remainder fo the drive.

I was really impressed with the sound with the roof up, the mohair absorbed a lot more of the cabin noise than the vinyl had.

Anyway here's some pictures from when we got home!

Looks like a cracking job there. I actually have a 2" tear in my vinyl hood, but luckily is on the side pinch point and therefore still water tight from rain. But when I do get around to actually replace my soft top I will certainly keep mazmania in mind.

OT: I think your exhaust needs seeing to, lets down an otherwise immaculate looking car :p

Nice, Not sure if he told you but for the first couple of weeks it is a good idea to just leave the roof up to give the material chance to strech as it will be very tight at the moment so raising the roof after lowering it could be tricky. I speak from experience.

Mohair roofs are much better... I do approve

I personally have no time for Mazmania after their "associates" at the farm bodged a repair on my rear sills and they were rusting again after two months but I have seen Mazmanias work on mohair roofs and it has looked good with nice quality materials.

Yeah they said it would take a while to stretch out as it is a challange to put back up!

I saw your posting on the mx5 forums about sills, didn't twig that was you!

That looks like a really nice MX5. Looks like they did an excellent job on the roof too

Thanks eidolon :D
