Ok,

I am 100% sure I have never bought left4dead from steam. But I have just started steam and it is happily downloading the game to install it. Soo has it charged me for the game, or will it download it then ask me to pay? Sooo weird as my friend has been hounding me to get this game lol.

It is free for today only, then if you want to continue to play you need to pay for it.

What? That's a bit daft.

I'm on a 100MB connection and I still can't download 5GB all that quick... what's the point in a demo of a few hours?

Better off giving everyone a 2 day trial to use when they fancy.

5GB on a 100mbit connection would take less than 10 minutes to download...

seriously steam is a pile of ****, to download xfire/register and load it up would take no more then 90 seconds, steam takes forever with updates

do not understand how people can use the thing, finally finished updating so took best part of 32 years to register, then it give me a pop up saying i can have velvet assassin for 30 ****in quid

what a rip off haha, cannot get me head around how people can use this thing

well didn't know how to get trial for left for dead so ive had to uninstall it, would prefer a virus on me computer lol

[/rant]

Firstly, not exactly comparing like for like there, are you? X-Fire does not include a content delivery system for buying games.

I've just started Steam, and it has taken approcimately 30-40 seconds to start up on a relatively average gaming PC. Any updating of games it is doing in the background.

Clicking the "Play it now" link under the "Free 24 hour trial" announcement on the start page is a good idea.

say i would have better then the average pc and still from downloading and installing then waiting it to update , to then having to register took agessssssss

and steam is like xfire from what i can see, even though i use neither of them

but come on 30 quid for velvet assassin??? seriously or do steam just like to have a joke with you?

Clicking the "Play it now" link under the "Free 24 hour trial" announcement on the start page is a good idea.

ive uninstalled it now , think ill stick to my lot cheaper hard copys :)

Yeah, the 'eyequeue' requirement for Steam is a bit much for some.

I sincerely hope you are being sarcastic. If not, you don't deserve to use Steam.

ok fanboy, jog on

Yup, a fanboy for Steam. That makes a lot of sense.

As does your inability to work out how to use a simple application.

Try the alternatives to Steam for content distribution - Games for Windows Live, Impulse, EA Downloader, etc.

None of them are as good as Steam, hence everyone's reaction to your post.

OK prices can be a little steep on steam, but theres been plenty of good offers lately - personally I'm happy to pay a little over the odds if it means I can start downloading immediatly and have the game to play 30 minutes later instead of ordering online and waiting a couple of days for it to turn up or having to go out and find a store selling it.

Admittedly quite a bit of time has passed since I signed up for steam... but when I did it, it took hardly any time at all and didn't require much intelligence to work it out.

It loads pretty fast for me and once running is quite light on performance... the only time I do have issues with the speed is when theres a new update + new news/games updates and it all stalls out for 30-40 seconds while it works out what its doing.

Why don't steam just make the demo playable again?

It seems a bit bizzare they killed the demo off (tho I still have a working copy - I also own teh game) but this way is far more effective for driving sales than a demo. Tho I think they should have made it a 3 day trial instead of 24 hours.

i like reading so feel free to enlighten me why this program is so good? had 3 times on my computer over last 4 years, 1st time for CS:S even though i hated the game, steam was constantly messing up for me and the rest

2nd time for gift some gave me on here for team fortress, hated the game and still couldn't get my head around the prices of the games on there, think i seen cod4 for somet like 45 quid, now thats pathetic

3rd time, just now and seriously its just ****, end of! lol

or just try walking to a games shop and save your self some cash?

can understand if you live miles and miles away from one but they'll only be a very few who would be in this situation
