I think its a False Widow. Was hoovering when I saw it crawling very slowly from under a set of drawers. Its not hairy - just black and shiny. No markings at all that I can see.
Created a thread on NHMs web site so they can confirm.

Well I captured a distressed finch trapped inside a room todaay. Wish I had my little friend here then he could eat that spider up DEAD !

:D

The pic here http://www.nhm.ac.uk/about-us/news/2007/may/news_11767.html looks identical to your second one so I reckon you have yourself a false widow.

Definitely kill it with fire.

From the same site:
"False widow spider bite reports include symptoms such as chest pains, swelling and tingling of fingers. Last year a man went to hospital for treatment after being bitten by what may have been a false widow spider - the spider was never caught so it wasn't identified."

I had to change my underwear just at the first picture.
If I saw that crawling around, I wouldn't sleep for weeks.

Yes, thats right, i'm a big girls blouse.

do not kill it with fire...

a guy up my street set a spider on fire, it ran down a hole in the floor boards and set the house on fire.... imigine explaing that one to the fire birgade
