What's Fuel?

You mean I've now got to shovel coal into my oversized BBQ Oven to play the damn thing as well now?!

From the publishers of Colin McRae: DiRT® and Race Driver: GRID® comes a revolution in multi-terrain racing and featuring the biggest racing environment ever created. Born of Asobo Studios' cutting-edge proprietary engine that has benefited from over four years of development, FUEL will present players with an astonishing no-boundaries playfield that's over 5,000 square miles (14,000+ km²) in size. With environmental detail inspired by America's most incredible landscapes, , FUEL will be the ultimate competitive go-anywhere racing experience.

FUEL will have players competing across wildly different terrain from deep snow to open wilderness and arid river-beds, and executing spectacular death-defying stunts as they race and explore this epic world on an unprecedented scale.

Features:

* No boundaries racing: FUEL is a groundbreaking racing game without boundaries - on and off-road, two and four-wheeled vehicles race a massively diverse environment inspired by the most challenging real areas of the American wilderness. Experience exhilarating races in a huge range of vehicles, explore over 5,000 square miles of wildly different terrain from deep snow to arid river-beds, battle the elements and pull off spectacular stunts in epic world on an unprecedented scale.

* Vrooom with a view: In FUEL if you can see it you can drive to it. With a jaw-dropping draw distance of 40KM, there's never been a world so large to explore or so many striking vistas to discover. The entire game world is available for players to explore in free-roam and provides a challenging, compelling environment for FUEL's stunning race events.

* Dramatic, dynamic extreme weather: Set in an environmentally damaged fictional future, the game world is further brought to life with real-time extreme weather that includes blizzards, lashing rainstorms, lightening strikes, sandstorms and tornados that transform the terrain and affect vehicle performance creating a unique race experience.

* Choose your own route, win in your own style: With a huge range of vehicles, player choice lies at the heart of FUEL's action-packed races as players speed across huge swathes of diverse terrain, carving out on-the-fly routes to take the chequered flag. Roadsters reach extraordinary speeds on the asphalt, monster trucks steam-roller through forests and dirt-bikes scramble down mountainsides as gamers take on dangerous short-cuts, death-defying jumps and clatter through spectacular cross-over points in a beautifully realised wilderness.

* 5,000+ square miles inspired by wilderness: FUEL's world is created from the most compelling, diverse and striking areas of the North American wilderness, from the Utah badlands, to Yellowstone Park and Arizona. Recognisable landmarks, including Death Valley and Mount Rushmore, are modelled from satellite data and rendered beautiful by the game engine. The effects of accelerated global warming - from sandstorms, blizzards and brush fires to tsunamis and tornadoes - create uniquely unpredictable and spectacular races.

* Online multiplayer: The online and offline worlds become one with a fully-integrated multiplayer featuring hundreds of preset challenges and countless locations where friends or strangers can meet to show off their skills and their customised rides or set out to explore the world together.

Sounds kinda cool, think I'd probably give it a miss though.

I have had it for a few days now, not that impressive, handling is not that good, some races give laggy controls, freeroam isn't needed as races can be started with the menu.

But it is too early to call it a disappointment, maybe with later cars the handling gets better and now my PS3 is YLOD so I have to wait a few eeks to get another one :(

Re: the 'choose your own route' it is disappointing that the A.I. stays on the road and you can cut corners to overtake them, they never do that, also the A.I. gets a speed boost the first part of the races and slow down on the last section so it usually ends up being a bit boring races as the first part you can't keep up and the last part you are much faster.

What is Hovis  is that some sort of Weetabix :p

AFAIK there isn't one date where the game is available, I had to search around and the 3rd store I tried had it in stock, two others were still waiting for stock of the game.

Pacific Rift is a better game racing wise (until tier 8 that is) but Fuel does have free roaming that is helpful to find new challenges and fuel drums (money) that allows other vehicles to be bought.

Had a quick read on some reviews (the only one i could find at first was from The Times  ) and from what I've read its a very average game, the two proper reviews i looked at gave it 5/10. They praised the size of the game, but there wasnt enough to do in it to justify it and as dutch guy said the AI just stick to one or two routes out of many.

Online it may be quite good though, racing against 15 other humans all taking random routes would be quite fun, though I doubt this will be a massive MP hit due to the average reviews.

Was really looking forwazrd to this as I'm a sucker for open/large games, will probably pick it up if I see it for <£20 in a few months time.

This had real promise from what I saw in a preview mag back end of last year, looks like it really failed, HARD.

I shall not bother.

I read the IGN review last night and it says exactly what I found.

I'm not that gutted I bought it though, my 6 year old son likes to free roam and find the fuel drums for me.

There are plenty of positive reviews around:

Edge - 8/10
TeamXbox - 7.8/10
Guardian Online - 4/5
Times Online - 4/5
OXM UK - 7/10
PSM UK - 8/10

The vast majority of user reviews on the Codemasters FUEL forum have also been very positive.
