how good are they really? i see a lot of positive answers on here regarding them bu i've never had one recommended. are they great cars but money pits?

Great cars, just bear in mind they're built by our neighbours, and unfortunately I don't mean the Welsh.

the scots arent cheese eating surrender monkeys :D

lol i gather thats a bad thing then.

aside from the nationality are they great cars then? i dont here of them being recommended except by people on here. those that do seem to love them, those that don't can take them or leave them. what gives??:o

Depends what you want from a car to be honest. Something bulletproof with lots of creature comforts, or something which is a hoot to drive on country roads with the sacrifice of a few rattles. :)

Bang for buck they're decent. Particularly on the used market.

There are those that rave about BMW's and those that can take or leave them. For a small, cheap hatchback with a daft engine they're good.

They are good cars.

Just bare in mind if it's a 172 you are after the youngest ones are around 5 years old now. For a French car this can be bad news.

If you get one that was built on a Friday you will know about it:eek:

Got one love it to bits fantastic car. Great laugh, cheap to run. watch out for electricals being french. alarms are normally crap. Engines are normally solid providing oil changes and belts are done on time.

Fanastic cars, but I found the interior to be poor - one I drive rattled when it wasnt even moving! I think CS-Nuts is on his 3rd gearbox on his

I'd just like to say, that I have one that getting on for 15 years old, and its fine, electrics, engine, everything. They can be reliable. Just not all of them, all the time.

I drove a Clio 182 on Dartmoor once.

The interior was completely crap, it rattled despite 4000 miles on the clock, it was full of pathetically cheap plastic and I looked like a woman about to go shopping.

It was also the most fun I've had on Dartmoor in a car whilst driving.

I bought mine feb 2005, it is an X reg (so a phase 1) and it had about 33k on the clock.

Now over 4 years later it's got 94k on the clock and is going great.

Costs pennies to run, is awesome fun, is plenty comfy for me, hard to fault for the money. Especially considering it's probably worth say 2k at the moment, bargain.

Wouldn't say they were money pits from my experience, you will get people hwo have had their gearbox go (maybe even twice :p) and a few othe big bills, but on the whole they are fine.

Servicing is minor minor major every 12k, from an indie specialist a minor will be sub 100, major around 150-200 depending on a few things.

Belts are 36k or 2 years for aux belts, 72k or 5 years for cambelt. Cambelt is a £300+ job, expect to pay £500 for a major service + belts + plugs (they are £60 a set from Renault, can be had on the bay cheaper)

Only non consumables I've had to replace are a broken spring, a leaky shock (bought 4 new ones as they were only 45 each), passenger side window reg and the exhaust.

The exhaust is a big weak point, most will have had them replaced as the renault ones are rubbish.

ev0's post is spot on. Aux belt change is 36k/3years though i think, not the 2 years mentioned above.

Ive had my 182 18months now. Its been completely reliable in the time ive had it. Biggest costs ive incured are £500 cambelt change and £400 on tyres as i went for top spec Michelin Pe2's. Tyres can be had a lot cheaper than that though.

The major cost is a cambelt every 5yrs so id recomend you look for one thats had belts in the last year or so (with proof of the change).

I couldn't remember so could be either :)

tbh the interior doesn't rattle on mine at all, and the electrics are fine :p

Plus on motorway journeys or when taking easy you get relatively silly mpg out of them.
