Dying drain man's cries ignored

The cries for help from a man who died after getting stuck in a storm drain were ignored by neighbours who put it down to drunken antics, a coroner said.

Mark Wells is thought to have dropped his keys down the drain in Ash Road, Newport, Isle of Wight, as he returned from a night out on Saturday.

The 32-year-old became stuck as he tried to retrieve them. A dog walker discovered his body on Sunday morning.

The coroner said residents heard him shouting for help but did not respond.

Coroner John Matthews said: "Residents living in Ash Road, a matter of yards from the drain, were woken by cries for help from him, but they thought it was somebody drunk and ignored them."

Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service was called to help remove Mr Wells' body the next morning.

Det Ch Insp Paul Barton, of Hampshire police, said: "The exact cause of death has yet to be established, but it is possible the man dropped some personal property down the drain and became stuck as he tried to recover it."

An inquest was opened and adjourned at Isle of Wight Coroner's Court on Wednesday.

What a way to go.

Where does it say he drowned? .............. I read, that the cause of death had yet to be established.

Could be a hard call to make, you never know if it was someone innocent (such as this occasion) or more sinister - it might be a trap!

Alcohol + Darwinism. A hearty mix.

inb4 pun spam.

Where does it say he'd been drinking?

The only thing about alcohol is the neighbours hearing but not helping due to thinking it was drunks messing about rather than someone actually in distress.

He returned from a saturday night out. If he wasn't drinking then he was just plain stupid enough to die inserting himself into a storm drain after what must have been an exceptionally boring sober night out.

I wouldn't wish drowning upon anyone, terrible way to go, very sad that people ignored his cries for help but I'm sure as usual there be a group of people on here will that'll think it was justified in some way, I personally would never ignore cries for help, I'd rather chance looking like a fool on the back end of a prank than chance someone dying that I could've saved.

I see what you're saying, dropping keys or getting stuck in things is sometimes the actions of someone thats had a few pops. Being Saturday night is another reasons to suspect drinking.

It's just the way you're so sure he was drunk from the information, maybe he could just be a clumbsy so and so thats just walking back from a late saturday shift or anything else. It doesn't say he was drunk in the article so it's a bit foolish to assume he had been even though it does seem highly likely.

There is a difference reading between the lines and adding your own.

You're all heart!

Jesus Christ.

Went down a storm drain to recover keys...bit a plonker move but none the less, horrible way to go and I can't believe people ignored him, sickening behavior.

This.

What a bunch of selfish ****s.

People didn't ignore what they knew to be cries for help, they ignored what they thought were drunken ramblings. If every Saturday night you hear drunk people shouting why are you suddenly going to rush out of bed and run downstairs on the 34th Saturday night on the offchance somebody is stuck in a storm drain?

If his cries for help we're mixed up with other peoples drunken ramblings then other people would have been nearby and helped him, but to me this sounds like a guy on his own, trapped, with no one else around apart from nearby residents that could clearly hear someone in distress and chose to ignore it, there's a difference between hearing a bunch of drunken revellers and one person shouting for help.
