Wheelarch rust repair - on the cheap!

Right Motors, I have noticed a small bit of rust appear at the bottom of the back arch, aswell as bubbles on the inside of the lip the rubber cover slides over.

So time to take back the whole arch and repaint :)

My question was this - if I take back all the paint with an angle grinder, use zinc primer, red primer and then rattle can it, will it hold up?

Rust is only a small area, any tips please share :) last time I did this on my old 400 it lasted at least until I sold it, which was 6 months from repair, and no rust had come back though.

How long do you expect it to last is the question. Most people seem to point out that the rust will eventually come back without replacing the metal. But if it's a 12 month thing, you'll probably be fine. If it lasts longer, bonus!

Angle grider might be a bit extreme for a a few bubbles though. Wire brush or similar would probably help you get a better finish wouldn't it?
 
Fair does, thanks :) I just assumed angle grinder with the brush head as it worked wonders on my subframe, but suppose that's totally different :p

Got myself a trade card at Halfrauds, so I'll attack it later on.

So coarse sandpaper to take the paint off, then medium to finish it down, then zinc primer, red primer and finish? :)
 
I think someone will come along and give a better insight, I just thought something a bit more gentle and slower than a grinder would be safer on body work, unless you're cutting the rust out and patching new metal in.

I think Lopez used Krust when working on the Manta. He rubbed it down to bare metal, used Krust to deal with the suface rust then primered and sprayed.

I'd go course, maybe medium (depends how well it rubs down), rust treatment, then fine coats of primer, wet sand with medium-fine paper, then finish (is it separate paint and laquer or all in one?)

I used Bilt Hamber Hydrate80 to stabilise corrosion, but Kurust and Jenolite are similar products.
