I'm interested in upgrading my E2160 (9x200=1.8GHz, 1MB) which I have running at 9x356=3.2GHz in a GA-P35C-DS3R.

I'm looking at Quad core 45nm chips which don't break the bank, maybe the E0 step Q9550 (8.5x333=2.833GHz, 12MB). I'm concerned about overclocking though. With the lower multiplier even a modest 3.2GHz needs a bus of 376MHz.

To make the upgrade worthwhile I'd really like to get to the 3.6GHz+ range, so that's ~425MHz bus.

So, simple question - is my P35C-DS3R up to the job?!

Oh, and I have 4x1GB of PC6400 DDR2 from OCZ in there:
OCZ2P800R22GK Platinum Rev 2 4-4-4

The board can't run less than 1:1 ratio, the RAM should be good for 400MHz at least.
So 8.5x400=3.4GHz should be doable?

Id be highly surprised if your mobo won't do 400fsb, my msi P35 my current E8400 is sitting in, runs at 400fsb, 1:1 with my memory 24/7.

I would say it also should hit the 425 ur after, but ofcourse not all boards are made the same.

Also overclocking with all memory slots full can be quite hard, just a warning.
