ATI Radeon 3200 and Toshiba TV - No signal

Using a Gigabyte GA-MA78GM-S2H with inbuilt Radeon 3200 chipset, complete with HDMI output, but can't get any signal to my Toshiba Regza XV series 37" TV via HDMI.

Tried BIOS option, HDMI is enabled.
Tried latest ATI drivers, chipset and Video.
Got realtek HDMI drivers on too.
Tried various known working HDMI cables.
Updated BIOS to latest version (F11).
No firmware updates available for TV AFAIK.

Anyone got any bright ideas as to how to get HDMI to display anything to this TV? I'm pulling my hair out here!

Is it just in windows you get no picture or is the BIOS screen as well?

Have you got another graphics card plugged into the PC?
Tried using a different HDMI connection on the TV?

No picture at all, even in BIOS. The same applies for the DVI out on the board when it's set in the BIOS.

No other graphics cards connected.
Tried all the HDMI connections on the TV (3), none work.
Tried disabling lip sync on the HDMI channels too and no help.
No audio comes over HDMI - most of the time it doesn't detect it's attached, despite CCC being able to read the EDID info from the TV.

The DVI and HDMI out work perfectly (though can't test audio) when plugged into my normal PC monitor.

No solutions for this problem?

I think I've tried everything. A PCI-E test card over DVI works fine, but it's not HDCP compatible (7200GS).

I wanted this to be a really low power PC, so avoiding a separate gfx card was the plan. Do the 785G motherboards suffer from this issue too, or is it more likely a TV thing with ATI cards?

Failing finding a solution, I'll need a low-profile (half height) low power gfx card, preferably with HDMI out that can carry audio too. Can anyone recommend one - cheapest possible please?

EDIT: Just been doing more research, looks like almost all PCI-E ATI gfx cards don't work with this series of TV, bummer! There is a possible solution - using a HDMI repeater. Might be worth trying before I have to buy a new gfx card. Anyone tried this?

I have a 37XV635 connected to my 4870x2 via HDMI, using the ATI supplied DVI-HDMI dongle and it works fine for both picture and audio. Using HDMI 1 on the TV. I am using 1920x1080 @ 60Hz. I think it was set to 50Hz by default, which worked too.

Thanks for the input, much appreciated - this problem is driving me nuts!

I think the model you have is a slightly newer and updated version of my TV. I don't have an ATI dongle of any kind, but I imagine a normal DVI-HDMI adapter should work fine for at least the picture, but it doesn't work at all. VGA from the same board works fine, but the resolution is limited to 1280x1024, which is useless on a 1080p TV.

Just tried older versions of catalyst drivers with no success. Don't really fancy flashing to BIOS to an ancient version unless I know it'll fix it, though it seems to have been a problem from the start.

Anyone else suffered this problem with the 780G chipset?

Yes! I most definitely have. And I was just about to post and ask if anyone here has managed to fix it! :D

I bought the GA-MA78GM-S2H when it first came out and quickly realised that there's a major compatibility problem with my TV (Same model as yours). Since then I've updated the BIOS and drivers periodically to see if it's been fixed. With BIOS F11 and CCC 9.9 it still seems to be broken.

If you look on Google you'll find lots of people who've had problems with Toshiba TVs; a few that have had problems with other brands; and about 2 people that claimed to have fixed it.

One of the people that claims to have fixed it is called "blastman" and he appears on a number of forums, including this one. Assuming it's the same guy you could PM him and ask him to comment on this thread.

Here's the thread where he says he fixed it:

I tried his solution but it didn't work for me.

PS. About 10 minutes ago I submitted a support request to Gigabyte. So I'll see if they come up with anything. One person claimed to have had it fixed by Gigabyte themselves, after he sent them his motherboard. They made some change to it and sent it back again.

Good to hear I'm not alone with this still!

When you said you tried Blastman's solution, do you mean the F8a test BIOS? There's no sign of it on the gigabyte site now, it has been surpassed, though obviously the improvements (or new VGA code) were never implemented in further releases.

I'd be very interested to hear what you get back from gigabyte. What exactly did you ask them? I might send them an email myself.

EDIT: I have bumped blastman's old thread on this very topic and sent him an email to see if he can shed any light on things.

Yes, I did try F8a. In fact I had it on there until last night.

I would have thought that the improvements were rolled into a proper F8 release and have been in every other release too.

I will definitely post Gigabyte's reply. They were very helpful when I had another problem with the same motherboard. Within one day they set up a replica of my system and were running tests on it!

PS. I wonder if this thread would get more eyes in the Graphics card forum???

EDIT: Just seen that you bumped Blastman's old thread. Good find.

OK, thanks.

I would have thought the revisions of F8a would be implemented, but it's obviously still not working for either of us!

As above, I've tried to contact blastman to see if he can help.

Might get more eyes in the graphics card forum, though seems like a very specific problem anyway. I had a fair few quick responses but then it dried up as it seems we've tried everything.

Yeah, that's happened everywhere else that I've looked.

Does your HTPC detect the TV in Catalyst Control Center? Mine does. It says "TOSHIBA-TV" and I can change res, refresh rate etc. But I never get a picture.

Yes, mine detects the TV with no issues either. It also reads 'Toshiba-TV' and the EDID information appears to be correct, just no darn picture.

Just looking, blastman may have the MA78G-S2H, which differs from the MA78GM-S2H slightly. I believe with BIOS F8a he was able to get a picture over HDMI at 800x600 @ 60hz. Were you able to on that BIOS?

I have also contacted gigabyte now for any help they can offer.

Oh!

No, I don't think so. I can't remember if I tried that particular resolution.

Hey guys,

I have managed to get full 1080p over hdmi from my MA78G-S2H whihc is indeed slightly different from your boards (me thinks)

I work for a leading IT distibutor and with thier contacts managed to speak to someone high up in there tech support. They basicaly wrote and then gave me the F8a BIOS which fixed the issue for me.

The nub of the prblem is that the handshake that goes on between the graphics chip and the TV does work. There was a few small changes that had to be madeto be able toget this BIOS working ok.

This is a link to the ati forums site in which me and a few others go through all the problems and I posted the soultion.

Hope it help :)

Thanks for your reply blastman, much appreciated.

You might notice your thread on the AMD forums was linked earlier, but the rapidshare link to the BIOS is no longer working, nor is it available on the gigabyte site, but I guess that's because I have the 78GM-S2H. I would have thought a fix would be implemented in future releases, but it appears not. Do you know if the BIOSes are interchangeable?

I have contacted gigabyte and I'm going to wait to hear what they say.

Arh yes I see.

I've noticed the link was working so I'm looking for the file now but I've had 3 machines in the past yer so I'm searching several drives for the file.

I'll have to get back to you on it.

I wouldn't recommend using a BIOS for another board, without gigabytes say so.

Thanks. Yeah, I won't be flashing it until I'm sure. My revision of the board doesn't have dual BIOS, so I have to be especially careful.

Thanks for your input. Just hope GB can offer me a similar solution, I can't use my HTPC at a reasonable res until they do (also means no blu ray playback because of broken HDCP!).

I definitely had an "F8a" BIOS... but perhaps it was a different one?

Also.. the Gigabyte website no longer lists the GA-MA78G-S2H.. only the GA-MA78G-DS3H. Wtf?
