5870 full performance update in cat 9.12 drivers

This will be nice for 5800/5700 owners if true. Wonder why its taken till 9.12 to get the most out of them? Possibly holding back until Nvidia make a move?

Both sides do it. Nvidia normally holds back performance boosting drivers for the launch date of ATI cards.

It's to make people think that they don't need to buy their rivals cards as they have just had a 20% boost in games.

Personally I think ATI's "big surprise" is going to be Physx (well I live in hope)

I remember there being a thread on here, about OpenCL being able to immitate PhysX in Batman AA but it hampered performance majorly.

Good news. :D

But weren't NVidia constantly demonised for intentionally "holding back" performance until it suited?

ACtually Nvidia did it IIRC for things like the GF4 ti series, when the 9700 came out, like what a year later. People didn't like them purposefully holding back performance for a year, just to poo poo ATi's next launch.

This is going to be basically the 2nd real driver set for the cards, its hardly surprising that the first couple drivers sets are more about bug fixing, its perfectly normal. Theres only so many combinations of setups you can test before you start selling the cards, at which point they end up in all kinds of weird system setups and bug reports fly in and performance takes a back step to not crashing and currently, big scary cursors caused by powerplay :p

WE should see obviously some big improvements in the biggest bugged games. LIke Company of Heroes always had issues with ATi cards for a long time, then one driver set you got like a 100% increase in fps under dx10.

I would suspect some improvement across the board, but a few buggy games to show a ridiculous increase and hopefully some of the bigger bugs fixed then or before then also.

If ATI have been holding back performance intentionally then that is very poor

I doubt it in this case. After all the cards were shipped with beta drivers. This week we only got the first "real" set of drivers.

It's more a case of they rushed the card to market before they had the proper drivers finalised.

So I would expect to see a major boost and loads of bug fixes in the next release.

Looking forward to this....was getting 45fps in one part of the Left4Dead 2 demo earlier SO TIME FOR MOAR POWAH!!!

Yeah look at how long the 8800's have been out, and when they released their so called big bang 2's, they still got a boost, and how many years was that after they launched.

Its normal, they deliberately hold performance back, both do it, should only take a couple or so driver sets to get the cards to their peaks, but they still giving them boosts after years lol.

Makes sense, as the 9.12's are Decembers drivers, and Nvidia's Fermi is rumoured to be released end of November. early December, so of course they'd hang on till then to give them a special driver.
