Just managed to spill a whole pint of apple juice into my PC (thanks to the good old huge fan/space at the top of the Antec 900) and now it won't boot.

I unplugged everything as soon as it happened and gave the entire internal working a good dry/clean (making sure i didn't knock anything on the motherboard etc).

However it no longer boots. When i switch the power on at the PSU the On and Reset switches light up on the bottom of the motherboard (Asus Rampage Formula) but when i press either the power button on the case or on the motherboard nothing happens.

I have a spare motherboard i can try, but no other spares and no second PC.

Whats the best way to go on from here?

Doh!

a whole pint ...... wow

Id say you'd be lucky to get away with it powering on let alone getting any further.

Knowing the internals of a 900 well (layout etc) id say your pretty much screwed. If the juice went in the top large fan hole its going to have gone all over the motherboard CPU RAM and gfx card. Only thing that MIGHT be ok is your hard drives.

You could try a spare motherboard but imo you would be wasting your time.

I thought I was being optimistic when hoping only one thing at most would be dead. I will try the second motherboard, perhaps in vain, and if no luck I'm right in thinking that I will need more or less a complete system rebuild - thankfully christmas is only round the corner!

Edit: A little explanation, the PC was on the floor just not quite under my desk. Someone knocked on my window and scared me causing me to swing my arms and knock over the pint!!!! I can't believe it :(

common sense was thrown out the window i see.

the only way to know what works and what doesnt, is by testing each and every component one at a time. It may also be likely that if it was switched on at the time, the motherboard might of wiped out a few other components.

what area did it hit most? or should i say, what did'nt it hit!

You'd have done better to leave it for a few days before trying the power button, but in all likelihood it's toast anyway.

Completely remove all power (don't forget the CMOS battery), and leave it like that for several days (or maybe a week). If it'll come back phoenix-like, that's when it will happen. Probably not though.

Don't go swapping components until you are sure everything is thoroughly dry (i.e. leave it a few days as above).

Unlucky, that was always my worst fear when I had my 902 on the floor next to my desk :(

Holy hell, I have my Antec 1200 sitting next to me, and I think I would die if I did that :/

How long did you leave it before you turned it on? ANd how thoroughly did you dry it?

From what i saw the RAM was completely missed and the H50 seems to have protected the CPU quite well (but i can't tell if the CPU is ok until tested) but I'm pretty sure my GTX260 is gone as it pretty much got showered and then just stayed as a bath.

However thanks for the help, im taking it all apart now - and going to leave all components to dry independently for a few days. Will update!

would it matter, i think he has destroyed it no matter how long he lets it dry for.

look forward to hearing the outcome of this, good luck!

Pro tip: If you put you drinks on the left, stick you kit on the right ;)

But in all seriousness, OUCH :(
Just because its dry to the touch doesnt meen its dry, if you have an airing cupboard stick your kit in there for a few days to totaly dry it out.
In all liklyhood though, its toast.

Well if it was turned on when soaked it's most likely a goner. But do try to dry out each component.

If it was turned off when soaked and you left it dry out there's a good chance it would survive.

a cooler even the H50 would protect the CPU from a power related short as a result of the apple juice spill.

Best of luck though, but it always pays to be realistic.

rma time .

imagine faces of tester why that pc smells of apples.

between how did u manage to spill whole pint in to it ? as usually the case is under the table ?

You will never get apple juice to dry out, juices like that always leave sticky patches that will just harden over.

Most likely the gfx card has died, the motherboard too. The RAM and processor may be damaged from the motherboard dying, but the hdd's should be ok.

If im not mistaken, the psu in that case sits with the fan pointing upwards underneath the gfx card?? If so that is dead/damaged too.

The moral of the story is dont keep drinks within the vicinity of electronics. Apple/orange etc juice is especially bad evcen to keyboards.
