hi guys

i bought a cheap mk3 mondeo 1.8 its showing 100k on the clock with fsh ect

was driving it last night and it started loosing power, so pulled up checked oil, no oil in it, so filled up with oil and now its chucking out loads of grey smoke and wont rev/idle properly

taken out the spark plugs and the plug from cyl 4 was wet and oily and had bits of metal on it

basically i think the piston rings have gone on it causing it to burn off the oil (was on max when i bought the car)

my question is, is the engine now wrecked or can i just replace the piston rings and away i go??

ive seen lots and lots of 1.8 mondeos with top end and bottem end problems

thanks

If it started losing power then it was on the verge of seizing. If there were bits of metal on the plug, then there will almost certainly be damage to the piston and/or bore.

at the end of the day, as long as the metal fragments haven't cut out gorges into the bore (unlikely!!) you could just replace the broken rings and punt it..

i'd be worried about debris.

i think it would be quicker just to get a used engine + hoist and get some mates round and get stuck in then think of excuses to explain the oil stains and stack beer cans to the mrs's :D

isnt a mk 3 mondeo a blacktop zetec like in a focus ?

No it's a Duratec HE.

Although having viewed two today my impressions of the cheap Mk3 Mondeo market are, at first glance at least, 'Run, not walk, away'.

If it was me, I'd scrap it and move on to another cheap runner if that's all your requirement is?.

Why throw good money down a pit?.

Because it's DannyW, its what he does, every month a new completley suspect car. It's a bit like a serial on here, everyone looks forward to the next installment. I'd like to know what happened to his apparently rather nice Octavia tbh

nout happened to the octavia

cept it started using oil and smoking badly on a cold morning so i sold it on ebay

i bought a cheap mondeo to put me on for a few weeks, just waiting to get a contact at a factory as a maintaince electrician then im buying a nissan navara 4x4

ive decided to sell the mondeo as spares or repairs and buy a focus

Gosh really? Thats unfortunate. Fancy that happening barely a few months after picking up an Octavia for half what it was worth.

so i sold it on ebay

Did you list the faults?

Epic, look forward to seeing what you pick.

you are looking at over priced ones of forecourts and people on piston heads thinking they have the best cars ect..

Or thinking they have cars that don't smoke when its cold and guzzle oil at an abnormal rate you mean.

Did you tell the new owner what was wrong with it?

Cambelt done at 56000 miles and at 109000 miles will next need doing at around 170-180k !! Clutch is excellent, The car has never used a drop of oil which is the sign of a good turbo

Edit - why is it I get my auctions pulled for keyword spamming when I describe a Toledo as "A Leon with a boot" but he can randomly slap "Golf GTI Leon" onto his auction title and it doesnt get pulled

there was nothing wrong with it,

So not only is every car you buy a nail you are also a liar - is that auction iand linked to really your car? You've categorically stated it doesn't use a drop of oil when in reality the fact it did was the reason you sold it!?!?

Is that legal?

This is a reluctant sale I am only selling due to been made reduntant

Really? So not because it smoked on cold mornings and guzzled oil, odd.
