Hi I have been using a Intel Q6600 quad for about 10 months now paid £140 from OCUK
it was a 2.6GHz but guaranteed to hit 3.3 but I have it @3.6ghz using a IP35 pro MB 8gig ram and it eats anything I throw at it, but is there anything out there
for £140 which will be better than my Q6600 and will run in my MB.
Thanks.

I doubt it very much, you'll get the Q8200 which is atrocious for clocking (in comparison to the Q6600) or the E8500, but that's about it

The Q6600 will be one of those CPUs that lives on and on :) same here, I have mine at 3.2ghz, can't seem to go higher for some reason but it serves me fine and I don't see a need to upgrade in the next year or so.

Ill stick my kneck out here and say that the q6600 is possibly the best cpu intel have ever made, had one at 3.8ghz on air, fantastic cpu.

I've been running mine for over 2 years now and I still can't fault it. I'm currently in 2 minds about it though.

Keep it forever - it's more than earned it and as silly as it sounds, I have a soft spot for this chip.

Sell it while it's still worth something - If I ever did decide to sell it on I'd rather do it sooner than later so it gets the price it deserves. I'd hate to let it go for £20 or so a year or two down the line.

yep I did have mine running @3.8 for some time but droped it down to 3.6
@3.8 its was running 52c max on air well its still using the standard heatsink and fan that came with it, but @3.6 its 45c max still with same cooling and I just cant see any way I could get a cpu any better with out spending a lot of money.
I asked the question to find out if this is one of the best chips Intel has made
I think it will be quite some time before I even think about an upgrade.
how much could a Q6600 be sold for? or would cost to replace?

Thanks
Dean

Omly if you live in the arctic circle, like to use your computer outdoors and never run anything more demanding than solitare.

I only wish mine would have ran at 52c on air at 3.8ghz, 68-68-62-62, p95 load was the best i ever got from mine, that was after lapping it and the TRUE cooler then whacking a pair of 2000 rpm fans on the cooler, voltage was just over 1.5v, prior to theese mods it was topping out at 81-81-72-72.

The Q6600 was/is/will be great for some time to come.

Great little chip, had mine at 3.6 and gave me no bother :)

I miss my old rig =/ roll on new one :)

Got mine on 3.6GHZ temps are 44 44 37 42

Looks like my surafce chip is a bit of an odd shape or my hetsink needs re applying. That 37 temp is out of place

Anyway there realy isnt anything worth the upgrade yet. i5 is good but i can not justify the price increase (mobo DDR3 Ram ect..)

Maybe when the i5 stuff has matured i will think about it

Nor does slating someone elses post....

My Q6600 has run at 3.6 for a year & I will be hoping to keep it for another year or so before I do upgrade.

It deserved it.
Clearly it is ludicrus to expect those temps on a standard heatsink.

Wind your neck back in.

Yeah its still a good chip, yeah its not as IPC efficient as the later quads so lost out towards then end, and the I7 chips overclocked beat it silly, but by and large its still a very strong chip, I bought mine about 2 to 2.5 years ago, my brother's just bought it off me.
Bar it high end air cooler to really do it justice due to load temps when all cores are pushed, its still a very very good chip.

Only reason Im not using it anymore is I got the bug for upgrades/new tech, and then I got a laptop :)

There's no reason to dump a Q6600, unless you've got something better waiting and need it (or feel you need it :D)

Thats basically what i done, sold the q6600 and bought a q9550 EO to try one out (also 3.8ghz from it), bit of a crazy upgrade i suppose. Sold it and then moved to i7.

I shall be keeping my Q6700 for another year no problems, i still dont have a non stock cooler, so its running at 3.0ghz however due to the x10 multiplier and not the x8 in which the Q6600 has, it isnt bothering me for now...

its the best buy i've made in a long time , but it was the Q6600 GO edition which made it worthwhile ... some of the Q6600 versions are crap for overclocking
