Makes me think of that attempt to bomb the Tiger Tiger nightclub in London.

The Tiger Tiger incident was a seriously incompetent attempt at making a bomb.

Firecrackers seems an odd one though. Could be very large crackers or maybe confined as they went off?

Maybe a gas leak or something... if not a bomb...

Your average set of event fireworks might kill a few people in the immediate vicinity but doesn't push out the shrapnel or force like proper explosives would - most of the initial blast dissipates in the first few feet... unless you have a few tons of the stuff. (Or illegal fireworks).
