Help! Galant (1999) keeps throwing "serpentine" belt

So I was working tonight, and suddenly my power steering disappeared. Pulled over, and took a look under the bonnet, the belt which drives the power steering pump and (apparently) water pump was hanging loose.

I managed to fit it back on, retensioned it etc, started the engine, and it just threw it straight off again, having looked at the drive pulley... thing at the bottom of the engine, it seems a bit lopsided - e.g. it wobbles slightly when it spins, unfortunately I couldn't really see it properly from just my torch =/

I'm guessing this is the cause of the belt coming off, but what's the most likely cause of the wobble? Something broken, or just a bolt come loose? I'm hoping the latter, but taking it to the garage tomorrow, fingers crossed for a not huge repair bill! :(

the crank pulley is wobbling? Maybe the harmonic damper has failed, it was a recall item on the Colt, can't see any such thing for the Galant though. If it is then pretty soon the pulley will fall apart into its two pieces.

Is this likely to be an expensive repair if that's it? Also, when I got the car it came with a 3 month engine/gearbox warranty (which expires christmas day) I'm assuming this would be covered under it?

Thanks =)

Not really, you'd just need a new pulley and the fairly straight forward task of fitting it.

I had a look, your water pump is not driven by the same belt as the PAS pump. There are 2 belts, one for the AC and PAS, the other for alternator and water pump (water pump is timing belt driven on the V6). If it was the crank pulley I'd probably expect it to throw both belts off rather than just one. You sure it isn't one of the pulleys on that specific belt run that is knackered?

From a quick Google it looked like it was running the water pump as well, but could be completely wrong =P

It is running 2 belts, and it's only the outer pully which looks like it's wobbling, so possible that they are attached seperately? The other pulleys on that belt seem to be fine, running freely/smoothly with no problems evident.

I'd get yourself onto ClubVR4 (despite the name, it deals with all 8g Galants, and many members have had non-VR4's) and ask there, someone may have seen it before, or even be breaking a car (WODJNO, Nick Mann Services, Zedy1, psbarham to name but a couple) which has the part(s) you need.

So... have just heard from the garage... the crankshaft pulley is coming apart apparently and needs to be replaced... cost ~£150, recommended to replace both belts, at ~£45 each, plus labour... £300 =/

Time to get onto the dealer about that warranty I suppose =P

Will also have a look on ClubVR4, cheers!
