Well, maybe for my generation and maybe the generation before me. (I'm 26)

Was just browsing the GT5 thread and saw some videos about the Playstation Eye and face recognition.

While all this technology is absolutley fantastic, it doesn't appeal to me. It started with the Nintendo Wii. Bought one, a few weeks later I sold it.

I really don't want to have to use any motion when i'm sat on my sofa relaxing and all I want to move is my fingers. That's it!

What's going to be instore for the Xbox 4/720 and the Playstation 4? No way will they use brainwave technology as then you'd just be sat there thinking about what to do on the screen when really they want you just be jumping about like idiots and calling it exercise.

Apologies if this thread has been done before but I didn't want to derail the GT5 thread that I was going to post in :p

Wrote a whole long reply, which got wiped when key got stuck... sigh.

Anyway, long story short, I think it's too early to condemn these things. I don't condsider the Wii much of an example of anything other than very good marketing, and will not base other peoples future endeavours off that machine.

I'm 31 and am looking forward to something new. Hopefully they do it properly though.

Correct me if I'm wrong but you don't actually do anything more than move your head in regards to head tracking and it's entirely optional...

Sounds like your problem is more related to Natal/Sony wand/Wii?

this is the same reason i sold my wii, i want to relax when i play games after a day at work as i dont have the energy after a 12 hour shift to jump about.

I know you don't have to but doing so will give a distinct advantage when playing online. I still see a huge boost in multiplayer gaming but I think the advantage will be in the hands of those who want to make full use of the tech. So it's either adapt or die :p

It could start to go that way. It reminds me of when the Mega Drive and SNES were the main platforms, loads of really good games then once the PS1 and Saturn came out, everything HAD to be 3D. All those great 2D and 2.5D games were stopped dead in their tracks. Things changed. It's only recently that some of these have been re-appearing on PSN etc.

To be fair I hate most of the Wii games that I've played. Purely because sitting in a chair waving your arms around makes you look like an idiot. It's good for parties and stuff, but I wouldn't want to do all of my gaming like that. Natal is another thing, why would I want to stand and pretend I'm holding a steering wheel to drive when I could actually buy a steering wheel and use that instead? Pointless imo.

I think it is great if it is done as an extra option, kinda like the way you arm an explosive charge in Killzone 2, but not as a main controller option.

A few months ago my friends would only talk aout Wii games they had that were fun and great but the novelty soon wore off and they got bored with it.

No worries as PS3 and Wii offer a great deal of longevity. Taking the PS2 as an example - it still has a market presence so regardless the PS3 will be around for few years after release of next generation particulary with its bluray player - it will happily sit in my tv cabinet until bluray gets replaced (5+ years?). If it lasts that long.

The Wii has a problem as a significant part of its market will be happy with the Wii as it is for next 10 years - it's like charades or monoply. Its going have to change strategy back to it's gamers or come out with something of similar brilliant innovation. At least they have the HD option which will interest the Zelda/Mario hardcore.

My experience with motion on the Wii has been a good one but has to be combined with controller buttons otherwise its very limited to handwaving. Its a good option to have and almost certain to play part in next generation. What's needed next generation is total motion control with feedback as good or better than a controller.

I've got handwaving and great graphics on current systems its going to take something very special to make me upgrade anytime soon. Either way this generation consoles are going to be with us for a long time and motion tech is no where near a stage where they can get rid of the handheld controller - the military use them for good reason. Hard to replace when you want control!

I agree with the OP sadly :(

The reason I won't get a Wii is that it's essential that you knob about with the controller!!
Some of the games are good fun, but there should be the option to play them with 'classic' controls.

If it becomes essential to have a camera pointed at me or sensors on me or in my hands etc to be able to play the next gen consoles, I think I'll become an exclusively retro gamer :(

Can't see a disc based blu ray replacement actually taking off. Sure capacity can be increased but why bother?

Neither dvd recordable or blu ray recordable has captured the market in a way that vhs did. Time shifiting using a hdd and tv on demand coupled has pretty much killed both. The only real market for recordable hard media is camcorders and small hdd and large eventually larger capacity solid state will finish that off too.

Good ole home (mass market) pc user soesn't need anything bigger than blu ray either and by the time we do it's solid state / fast reliable BB all the way.

Companies dont make you do anything.

Players like you and I decide the future gaming and how well the products that come to market do. I doubt that will ever really see the end of a grasss roots hands on controller.

Yes im realy realy hating the new direction the consoles are going with this motion control. You realy do need "something " in your hand for feedback reasons alone.

Maybe the PC can gain the more hardcore audience the PS3 and 360 have attracted recently.

I think the Wii could be good if its motion controls had any kind of finesse to them. As it stands you can't really get any precision out of it making many of the games a big wagglefest. I suspect that future generations will probably fix that. Then again, waving your arms about lacks the simplicity, and not to mention dignity, of a game pad.

Sigh! Next, you lot will want a 360/PS3 pad to drive your car!

The controller will still give feedback, but you won't have to wave your arms about like a loon whilst trying to turn the wheel and move the gear stick. God forbid someone actually sees you using the pedels! They might think you are having an epileptic fit!

I' mt he opposite - i'm looking forward to Natal, however, i hated the wii because it's too simple and the gfx let it down badly, as the tech gets better, i'm sure the experience will also get better, think about when oLED tv's get bigger and better and they can offer you a 180 degree experience, in 3D, with body motion control - now that to me is exciting.
