I think I may have pulled off a minor coup

My current equipment is a 400D, an EF 70 - 200 F4 non IS, an EF 24-105 F4 with IS and a 1.8 nifty fifty.

I decided that I'd reached a crossroads with photography as a hobby, and have recently bid on some used 40Ds and 7Ds (not many of the latter around) to no avail. I decided that I either needed to turn this into a proper hobby and get a proper camera body to go with the glass, or just move on to something else.

I think I've secured the former. Tomorrow night, in exchange for £3,200, I pick up the following:

EOS 1Ds Mark II
EOS 5D
EF 85mm 1.8
EF 20mm 2.8
EF 70–200mm 2.8 IS
EF 24–70mm 2.8
Metz 45 CT-4
Metz 45 CL-4
Canon 580EX

Plus a whole host of filters for each lens size, as well as 4 or 5 assorted bags.

None of the kit has been used for nearly a couple of years (original owner deceased, and now adopted owner just wants to move on). It is a little dusty, but that's it. Each camera has less than 20,000 shutter actuations.

Pictures to follow late tomorrow night with a bit of luck. I plan to sell my own existing lenses, with the exception of the nifty fifty, and also the 400D body, then get both cameras properly cleaned.

To say I'm happy is a massive understatement. I'm fairly confident the kit is worth more, but that's not the point - it was a great chance to take a huge jump up. I gave the seller a fair evaluation of what the kit was worth (I know her through a friend who is a professional, albeit Nikon ;) ), and then told them what I was able to pay, and it was accepted after some minor negotiation.

Roll on tomorrow!

Well done, you'll love that little collection then and pretty much no need to upgrade anything for a while!

A little bit sad actually. The seller's partner was a professional and he passed away a couple of years ago. She's only ready to move on now, and I got the contact from his previous business partner who I've hired in the past for some photoshoot stuff at work as well as attending his photography courses.

Hence why everything is unused for a couple of years, and a little bit dusty. Lenses were all boxed, just the cameras were stored out in the open.

Must admit, I've been reading up on the 1Ds and is really very daunting. It is going to take a lot of learning to start taking advantage of all the features. The 5D battery was dead, but incredibly after nearly 2 years, the 1Ds battery had some life in it.

There were some studio lights and stands as well plus umbreallas and softboxes, but I didn't want to see those and didn't express an interest either. I think they're going to just go straight to the other photographer.

You utter, utter git. Well done :D

I tried the 85mm f1.8 yesterday, great little lens. Quicker to Af than my 70-200 f4L.

P.S. I can haz 5D?

I had to battle through Suffolk's ice and snow, but have emerged with everything. Well, almost everything - turns out she didn't want to part with the Metz flashguns as they're now going with the other lighting gear. I wasn't too concerned, especially as she'd found a total of 18 GB CF cards and two hard body cases - the smaller one will be useful for holidays I think.

Please excuse the rather franzied and hasty snaps - I was a bit like a kid at Christmas. Whole set is here - http://www.flickr.com/photos/gregkingston/sets/72157623278921307/

No photos taken yet on either camera. I'll need some serious reading up on the 1Ds to get started with it. The 5D looks more straight forward, and should be fairly easy to pick up after the 400D.

There are less than 8,000 actuations on the 1Ds, and less than 1,000 on the 5D - the original receipt is in the box (£1,900 from Jessops in 2006!) so this never had much chance to be used. Yet the 1Ds looks very well used - strange - maybe it was reset somehow.

Anyway, I'm still happy!
