Q6600 help clocking over 3ghz

Here are my bios settings at the moment and pic of cpuz memory and temp settings at 3ghz. I have tried slackening timings on memory, 2 sticks, increasing the vcore on cpu, higher fsb with lower multiplier and nothing seems to get it to load into windows at 3.2ghz.

what motherboard is it? i cant get over 3.1 on my p965 ds4

Gigabyte P45 DS3P. Im sure its not that, on an XFX 650i ultra board one of my mates got 3.2ghz with the same memory and different Q6600

What is the max you have tried the CPU vcore? What does it droop to on load?

Your MCH probably needs a little more, although I am not sure exactly what setting you need to change on that board. I would assume its the core setting.

For reference, to get 3.6ghz with my P35 board in sig, I used these settings...

vcore of 1.52 bios (1.42 - 1.43 under load with vdroop)
VTT at 1.23 (I think this is the CPU Termination on your board)
MCH at 1.29
the others default

droop is as above - 1.375 > 1.296

Ill try those settings now and see what happens. Thanks

edit - its booted up at 3200 wow! 356 x 9. now to check vdroop, if prime doesnt crash...

1.440v at load

...86c with prime using a scythe heatsink and 120mm akasa fan. Is this safe?

Woah!!! 86c is way too hot!! :eek:

You should be trying to keep it below 80c really.

For reference my temps at 3.6 max out at 70c on the hottest core.

Are you sure the heatsink is seated correctly? Decent paste used?

86c really doesn't sound right...like Diggsy said, check to make sure your heatsink is fit properly with all the push-pins all the way in.

It was a bit of a ****er to get on. Currently still at 3.2, idle is between 36 to 40c. Load is around 85. Think ill look at getting the Corsair H50 cooler. Think im more likely to get one install right if it has a backplate instead of crappy plastic push clips

The Akasa fan on the heatsink i think only spins at around 1100rpm, it never seems to get any faster

As above 86c under load is too hot so get that sorted first.
If you want some advice on how to get that done, post back with the exact model of cooler you are using, what Thermal paste, what speed your fan is running at and as much info about your setup as possible really.

When you have that sorted, it may well be that it is your RAM holding you back. What specification RAM do you have? and have you tried changing the "System memory multiplyer speed" setting in the BIOS so that you memory frequency in the BIOS reads 667?

I have the same board (non P model though) and I just changed the FSB to 400 and multiplier to 8 for 3.2GHz. Changed RAM multiplier too so it runs at 800MHz. Apart from that I left everything else on auto and it runs flawlessly. Idles at around 30ish and under full load hits 60. I found with these boards they're great for overclocking (Briefly had chip at 3.6 with 450x8 FSB) but you need to put a fan on the NB as it burns up. I just put an old 40mm fan on it that I had lying around and run it on 5v so it's not too loud. Hope this helps

P.S: Also I found that redoing the thermal paste on the NB helps a lot as that has lowered the NB temps by a few degrees.

Why 667, it says 800mhz in the bios. I thought thats what it should be

Memory is OCZ Platinum 4 x 1gb rated 4-4-4-15 @2.1V. I have now lowered that to 2.0. I touched the ram during a prime blend and it burnt my finger!

Not sure what Scythe heatsink it is. Mugen maybe?

richb93 - what volts are you using? Vcore, MCH and memory?

Coretemp there will be showing your load temps 10 degrees celcius too high as tjmax for q6600 should be set to 90c. Latest speedfan temps will show it correctly. So 86 is 76. Still not great at that lower clock and vcore for a q6600. Check your heatsink. You may require a fairly high vcore. I run 3.6ghz at 1.475 vcore 24/7. I recall getting 3.2ghz took more than I thought it would in terms of vcore. You might also want to raise your MCH Core which will help with stability.

jaybee - Was yours at 1.475 after vdroop I take it? I.e, mine is now set to 1.52 in bios but shows 1.440v in cpuz at load.

Where do you lower the tjmax?

I will raise the MCH Core (even though i dont really understand what it does)

I can check the heatsink but i only have a small amount of AS5 paste left. Ive re-seated it about 3 times now. I hate the plastic push clips

Guest2, just as a bit of reassurance to you. I have the EP45-extreme, which is basically exactly the same board as you and I had to increase my vcore to 1.50 to get my Q6600 stable at 3.6 (8x450 - tried both).The boards do seem to suffer pretty badly from vdroop/drop

The only other settings i touched was to ensure the memory is running within its spec and I increased CPU PLL termination from 1.5 to 1.6. No idea why, just read it ages ago when looking into overclocking the chip.

Those tempershould be 90c and not 100c for the Q6600 - but i can't work out how to change it either! I have fitted a H50 and it keeps the temperatures to about the 65 mark (give or take a few degrees either way) under load in OCCT.

I dont think you can change the TJMax in core temp download real temp and use that

1.5 in BIOS. I meant to say not to worry too much about setting the vcore relatively high.

Have you tried re-seating your cooler?

I'll try reseating tonight with the bit of paste i have left. Sure its on right though, all the plastic push clips are definately down

To change the setting in CoreTemp, simply go to Options>Adjust Offsets and put -10 in there (it will still show 100c TJmax but offset the temps as if it were 90c). Although I have done a lot of reading on this and there are varying opinions as to whether 100c is accurate. A lot of things I have read would suggest it is safer to aim for 95c Tjmax.

I would suggest you give the MCH a little boost then see if you can lower the vcore. You should be able to strike a nice balance, and a slightly lower vcore will help your temps.

Try MCH core at between 1.2-1.25 and Termination at 1.25 or whatever is closest and see what happens.

Oh btw the MCH is the Memory Controller Hub (Northbridge)

I have the mch on 1.29 at the moment. Ill try lowering Vcore

I just ordered the H50 second hand with a 'Noctua NF-P12 Vortex-Control 120mm Quiet Case Fan' for £50. This should mean i might be able to clock it a bit more without it roasting
