unlocked my 550 to a quad, but it crashed going into windows now will not even post any ideas!!

Have tryed 2 different boards but it seems the chip is fooked!

Reset BIOS using the button/jumper on mobo. Then try upping the VCore to 1.400V and see if it'll boot @ stock 3.1GHz.

Probably jsut over heats as soon as you turn it on.
If i remember rightly, amd CPUS boot on full power.
So try it on a tri core or something first.

i have fitted an aftermarket cooler, all the lights come on and fans but still cant get to POST. grrr.

i would love to try on tricore but it will not POST lol

i think i might have cooked it.....are AMDs a bit sensitive!! didnt run it for more than 3 mins before rebooting

Not up to scratch on AMDs, but is this unlock via BIOS? if so then why does a bios reset not cure it? Or does it activate some previously turned off/blocked area of the cpu that once on, is on for good?

Yeah it's via the BIOS. I've switched from 3 to 4 and back and forth a few times without any problem. But I have a fully funtional quad core. If the unlocked core(s) are disfunctional, who knows what could happen?

Thinking about it though, my guess is that AMD intend for these CPU cores to be unlocked (marketing gimmik?) so I'd be surprised if a failed attempt caused permanant damage. Resetting the BIOS should revert it back to it's original state, ie X2 550BE @ 3.1MHz. It does with my X3 720BE.

It might be that the RAM has failed or something though. I'm guessing that the same RAM was used on the other mobo?

have tried different combinations of RAM, im still investigating, should find out tomorrow if its toast or not as im getting a few components delivered.

If it was core 0 that was locked out, and if it was locked due to faults, then there is a good chance you wont get the PC to post, as its core 0 that runs all the post tests :/

Sure some may be binned for marketting gimmick, but others are likely to be failed quads.

Hmm, if core 0 was locked out how did it POST in it's original state?

I really do think that if the cores can be unlocked, that they are in fact meant to be unlockable and that we are meant to find out. Whether the unlocked core(s) work or not is the lottery but as far I have read up and seen, the situation is reversible with a hard BIOS reset. Clever marketing.
