Rejoice, owners of netbooks with Intel GMA 500 graphics: Flash Player 10.1 Beta 3 is here, complete with hardware video acceleration for your machines. That should make Hulu and YouTube HD usable on machines like the Sony VAIO P and VAIO X, the Nokia Booklet 3G, and the previous-generation Dell Mini 10. The new build also bring support for the Broadcom Crystal HD accelerator found in Pine Trail Atom machines like the newest Dell Mini 10 and HP Mini 210 -- support we found sorely lacking when we reviewed the Dell. We just tried it out on our review HP Mini 210 and it managed 720p YouTube just fine, although 1080p was a no-go -- we're waiting on some updated Broadcom drivers though, so don't take that as gospel quite yet. We'll have much more on that in our full Mini 210 review; for now you should all get downloading and let us know how it's going in comments.

I don't get Flash hardware acceleration on my main PC as I'm using 185 series nVidia drivers so would have to use 195.xx or above to get GPU acceleration in Flash HD - I don't want to update the driver as these drivers work great so cannot confirm how well BETA3 compares t BETA2 when I had the 195 series installed.

Still, 10.1 is useful for those with a CPU not capable of 720p or above Flash playback (so anything that doesn't have a Dual core CPU).

Each review I read say iPlayer has (or had) problems with the Ion, not quite up to speed yet etc

Once iPlayer is fully supported at decent speeds, I'll be making my sister an el cheapo Media Centre box :)

Someone with an Ion can test beta3, it may well work this time!

Wow, gotta say I'm impressed. Just watched some HD iPlayer on my HP Mini 311 with 1.6GHz Atom and Ion and it was smooth as silk. CPU usage varied between 40-85%.

I've just tested some 720p avi and mkv's and they're smooth as silk too at 20-45% CPU usage, where as they were tad juddery before. Haven't got anything 1080 handy at the moment, but will test it later.
