Welcome!

I've decided to post some pictures of my latest guitar mod, for the pleasure of the modders at OcUK. It's a Van Halen signature based on my first guitar, a Fender (Squire) Stratocaster. The entire process I used to build this guitar is up on YouTube if you want to do the same

This is going to be multi-part thread, so I'll start with pictures of what I have to work with. It's a 1999 Squire Strat, originally in Red, but resprayed purple after it got abused through years of gigging..

This isn't a HOW-TO thread, more a before and after thread. It originally was meant to be, but I didn't take pictures until I'd already sprayed and taped the guitar (idiot!). I hope to cover the wiring and the overall re-build a bit better.

More pictures later.

cool axe :)
i've recently done a bit of a 're-work' on my 1st guitar. an 80's red 'sunn mustang'.
it's now got locking tuners, a custom white scratchplate with 1 black seymour duncan hotrails SHR-1 pickup parallel to the bridge. sounds great and plays great too!

my god, the cavities on squiers are massive!

You souped her up at all? Or is it just cosmetic?

No, it's going to have all new electrics and a maple neck.

  • Dr Parts Maple Neck (maple/maple fretboard)
  • DiMarzio Tone Zone humbucker
  • Black "blank" scratchplate.
  • 500ohm CTS volume pot
  • 1/4" jack (let's say the current one has had it's day!)

All other metal work e.g. bridge and machine heads have been cleaned with Isopropyl Alcohol.

Just waiting for the lacquer to dry for more pics :)

Bit of an update.

Here's a better picture of the neck. Solid maple, finished with a satin coating :)

The neck requires drilling for the machine heads and body mount, so I quickly did that. The electrical tape is merely holding the heads in place while I drilled some pilot holes.

Here's a finished shot of the mounted machine heads on the neck. I chose not to put the metal covers on, to give it more of a grunge look.

For those who are wondering what the body looks like in it's current state..

Right, I'm back with the final update. It's not ready to play (no strings) but it's finished.

As the neck and scratchplate needed drilling I started that first..

I chose to mount the humbucker directly on to the body, as that was the method Eddie chose to use as he believes it gives better sustain. If you can see, I padded the gap between the mounts with the foam that came in the humbucker box. It's rock solid.

Wiring the pickup is straight forward, although this is a 4 conductor, so I'd though I'd post pictures for those who come across it (some pickups are 2 conductor). There is a green, white, red, black and a shield wire.

The black is the main feed from the pickup, the red and white are unused, and the green and shield are used for a ground.

This is a better picture (which I've labelled) showing where everything goes in relation to the volume pot. Remember, there is no pickup switch, just a humbucker and a volume pot. I have not wired the 1/4" jack in the picture.

... and finally, here it is wrapped up.

Hope you enjoyed the project. I am planning on making the red, white and black frankenstrat in the near future so I'll be back with another thread, hopefully with better pictures on how I actually sprayed the thing!

I've just purchased one of these:

It will be arriving early next year and am planning on replacing the pickgaurd, should be an easy mod that is nowhere near the scale of this! Good job by the way!

Out of interest though, is it possible to put an S-1 switching system on the HSS? The current pickups will be a Diamondback Humbucker and 2 TexMex single coils. Would it be worth putting in the S-1 myself?

Any plans to do the red, white and black one yet?

Funny you should ask, I've got the parts (including genuine 1979 quarter) but haven't ordered the body yet due to other commitments.

Also, the spray job on the red, white and black is insane! Literally twice as hard as this one.

Not really a fan of Strats, or EVH, but looks like you've done a pretty good job. :)

Now string it up and plug it in! :D
