We are off to Barcelona for 5 days tomorrow - the missus has planned most of the stuff but I wanted to check if anyone has been before and can recomend some 'must do' things (places to eat, see and visit etc...)

Anyone done one of the segway tours over there?

I went last summer, Definately one of the nicest cities I have been to.

As for things to do I guess that depends on what you enjoy. When I went with a friend we didn't have much planned and just tended to walk around finding things to see.

Obviously you've got the Cathederal - Sagrada Família - started by Gaudi. Its not expected to be finished for another 15 or so years but to be honest, they have kind of ruined it. When you see the original build compared to the bit they are adding now its quite sad. Almost has a Disney look to it.

Nou Camp tour? Not sure if you are into Football or not?

Hopefully you are staying near las Ramblas as thats the main tourist street with loads of bars/restaurants/shops on or around it.

I'd take the cable car up to Montjuic then while you are up there you may aswell go and visit the olympic village. Its a nice walk with stunning views. You can get on the cable car down by the port and in the evening they have a fountain show on which seems to attract a lot of people.

The red and blue tour buses are the way to get around. You can get a 2 day ticket and hop on and off as often as you like.

There is a restaurant called Agua which is by the beach. It is lovely. Like everything else there, it is a bit pricey.

Go to the Taxidermist Restaurant in Placa Real off the Ramblas and have the set menu at lunch time. By far the best meal cost for quality you will get anywhere in Barceona imho.

Within 7 days, myself and my girlfriend visited:

- Nou Camp
- La Sagrada Família (Massive church thing)
- Ppark Guell (Famous park thing)
- A random castle on a hill with a cable car
- Las Ramblas
- The beach!
- A bull stadium
- The gothic part of the city which was amazing to look at

...christ we did a lot actually!

Watch out on the underground - an "uncle" of mine got mugged (well they tried) just as he got onto the train but managed to fight them off - not a nice thing to hear about considering he's getting on now!

They tried it just as he got on the train - hitting him in the stomach and trying for his wallet etc as the doors closed leaving him on the train and them on the platform.

Sagrada Familiar, Parc Guell, Zoo & Parc De La Ciutadella, Columbus Monument, Tibidabo & Funicular ride upto the top, Montjuic and the olympic area, cable car ride down to the port, stroll down la ramblas, take in the gothic quarter and cathedral, shop down the diagonal or the grand via.

Best way to see it all is red & blue routes on the bus touristica, ignore the green route as its crap.

Just generally stroll round and take in the sights and sounds of the place, be aware of beggers and bag snatchers - there are a hell of a lot in Barcelona especially on la ramblas and its side streets, you can usually spot them as they are oldish women with babies or children who come up and ask for money whilst some little **** steals from you.

Also stop of on la ramblas and watch the 3 cups / pea game, watch all of the tourists get sucked into playing and losing 20 euros.

PS - for food go to the supermarket on la ramblas, don't sit and eat on la ramblas or any irish bars.
