This is too damn difficult, so this will be the 5 albums I'd keep if I could only keep 5 (so this might not be the top 5, but the top 5 I'd want forever)

My favoured genre: rock/industrial/electronic
Age - 24

1. Celldweller - Celldweller - This album is pretty much the peak of genre fusion music, he combines metal and techno in the same song and it sounds good.

2. Nine Inch Nails - The Fragile - Quite simply the best album ever created and I could listen to it forever. Shows that something good can come out of misery.

3. Porcupine Tree - Warszawa - I wouldn't ordinarily include a live album, but PT sound so much better live and this CD is their ultimate performance imo. So many great tracks together.

4. Jamiroquai - Travelling Without Moving - took me a while to narrow this down to one Jamiroquai album, but this is probably their best.

5. BT - Emotional Technology - Just brilliant, this album got me into a type of music I never thought I would like, still sounds as fresh as the first time I heard it.

My favourite genre: rock/alternative
Age: 19

1. Feeder - Comfort in sound
2. The Verve - Urban Hymns
3. Travis - The Man Who
4. Red Hot Chili Peppers - Californication
5. John Frusciante - Shadows Collide with People

Nirvana - Nevermind and blink-182 - Enema of the State just narrowly missed out.

My favourite genre: Metal
Age: 20

1. Metallica - ...And Justice For All (Metallica at their prime IMO)
2. Machine Head - The Blackening
3. As I Lay Dying - Shadows Are Security
4. Trivium - Ascendancy
5. Megadeth - Youthanasia

I don't really have a lot of favourites as my taste in music seems to change a lot, one week I'll listen to a lot of one band, then move on to another the next...but the ones I've listed are ones that I will always listen to!

Would have to put a lot more thought in but... right now..
The Strokes - Is this it?

I seem to remember Gustov that you enjoyed the last segment of the new Muse album (exogenesis). Accordingly, if you haven't checked out Pink Floyd, you should really do so, because they are pretty much the definition of 'epic'. Essentially, listen to this the whole way through, and by then, you'll know if you like Pink Floyd. The Great Gig in the Sky is incredible (from 7 minutes in):

Age: 28

Preferred genre: Rock/all sorts

You want just 5? Good grief...

1) Girl Talk - Feed The Animals - I really can't recommend this highly enough - I think everyone should listen to this album. It's a mash-up album, combining music from just about every genre going. Even if you don't like it, it's worth a listen just for the technical accomplishment of combining 350ish samples into a solid 54 minute block of music. It's absolutely incredible. In other news, it's also genuinely free to download on the label's site.

2) Beastie Boys - License To Ill - This is a brilliant rap/rock album and an outstanding debut. It's over 20 years old, but it's still incredible. You like Linkin Park so you should definitely find this accessible.

3) Eels - Souljacker - This is sort of slightly experimental weird rock music. Has a sort of rough minimalism about it, and the lyrics are very sketchy but very evocative.

4) ELO - Out of the Blue - I'm sure I'll be mocked for suggesting ELO... ELO must be a bit embarrassing, given that Alan Partridge likes them, but hey ho. It's very exuberant, joyful music. There's a lot going on and it's very well produced.

5) Green Day - American Idiot - Somewhat divisive punk-rock opera. An incredible comeback after a slight deterioration in quality. Bound to annoy the "true" punks who will hold this up as yet further evidence that Green Day have well and truly sold out. So? STFU - it's great.

Long list of runners up...

Radiohead - OK Computer/Hail To The Thief
Muse - Origin Of Symmetry
Johnny Cash - The Man Comes Around
The White Stripes - Elephant
Jay Z - The Black Album
The Beatles - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
Belle & Sebastian - not sure which
Blur - Parklife
Prodigy - The Fat Of The Land
Smashing Pumpkins - Mellon Collie & The Infinite Sadness or Adore
