First post so hi. Been reading the forums over the last week picking up some ideas for my first build from scratch.

This is my idea so far;

Still to add is the memory, OS and monitor(24”)

I cannot quite stretch the budget to the x6 black edition so would I be better off with the x4 black edition?

I do intend on upgrading in the future, second 5870 and dedicated sound card but want to keep the price down initially.

No need for that motherboard firstly, Go for 2 samsung f3 500gb or just 1tb....and personally i would change the case to something like the Coolermaster ATCS 840 then buy a corsair h50 and Corsair HX750w seperate.
And i would also go i7 as it is a superior machine and can be easily bought for the same price as the AMD one

Photo processing (CS5) and gaming.

Then the 955BE quad cpu will be fine, comparison- http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/88?vs=147

the rest of the spec is awesome, but maybe the motherboard is a bit OTT, how about this one? http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=mb-393-as&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=1782

and dont get the samsung f3's, heres a recent review, the seagate' are better http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/storage/display/500gb-hdd-roundup_18.html#sect0

Also the F3 drives have issues with the new 8** chipsets http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18148038&highlight=startername_CAT-THE-FIFTH unless you fancy updating the fimware

Thanks for the replies, saving me money already.

The thinking behind the motherboard was the addition of the x-fi sound card built in.

For the memory I am looking towards Crucial. Only because I've used them in the past and been reliable.

over-rated, normal onboard sound from any of the lesser model boards is excellent, unless your an audiophille? or want crossfire at 16X/16X

the 890GX do 8X/8X

Good to know, the 890 sounds more than enough for my needs then. Cheers.

I would suggest having a look at this CPU and this motherboard. It will cost the same as an AMD Hex core build, but perform much better in games and lightly threaded applications.

I will check them out. Haven't really looked at many i7 builds as they always seemed to come in more expensive at what appears to be a similar spec.

the ram costs more, being triple channel/three sticks, approximately £45-50 more, so not to much considering the rest of your first post

Aye, they usually are. But with the recent drop in price of the i7 920 (£190) and the crazy deal on the P6T Deluxe OC Palm motherboard (£120), you can get an i7 CPU + X58 motherboard for £310, while the AM3 board + AM3 X6 listed in the first post costs £327.

Here is how the two CPUs compare at stock speeds.

X58/ i7 works fine with dual channel DDR3. Triple channel is the best it can do, but it doesn't mean its the only option - especially considering todays massive RAM prices. But you are correct, if you are spending the best part of £1200, you may as well have the extra bandwidth/memory available.

Just been checking out the i7 and I think it would suit me better, the extra ram will come in handy for photo editing and the combo with that motherboard seems very over clockable.

Sorry to drag this back up again and thank you for the replies so far.

I've just spotted a Sapphire Ati 5850 2Gb for less than the 1Gb 5870, would this provide more performance?

(Have I really just asked if 2 is more than 1 lol)

Do you really need a Blu Ray drive? I didn't include one but if so obviously swap that out.

The 800D case is expensive, but gorgeous, so a good choice but you could save a lot here. Case is a pretty personal choice though :)

Also if you are looking for Crossfire 5870s in the future, a 750w PSU would probably be a wiser choice, not the 650w included in the case bundle.

Thanks for that, definitely what I'm looking for.

It's not a necessity as this build is going in the living room and I already have a Bluray player.

Again as it's going in the living room so I'm looking for something pretty. I also quite like the look of the Coolermaster Cosmos so I might save a few quid there.

Noted. As I won't benefit from the saving from the bundle it opens up more case choices.
