Just been looking at theyre own brand PSU's and im wandering is it worth buying one or would i be better going for a name brand.

Any opinions gratefully accepted

I think its best to go for a well known brand, what wattage you looking at the 400w corsair cx is on this week only.

Hi w1ldhart,

A PSU is an important part of the computer and one that is generally not changed very often so it makes sense to buy a decent branded unit that will cover your needs for the next few years . . . . been using a Corsair HX520W myself for 18 months or so, modular, quiet and with two PCI-E 6+2-pin in case I need to power a big mama GPU or perhaps a CrossFire set-up . . .

If I was buying new today I'd probably opt for this model . . . YMMV depending on what hardware you need to power today and what you intend to power in 6-12months? . . .

OCZ ModXStream Pro 500w

I have the OCZ ModXStream 600w, brilliant PSU.

If you are on a budget the Corsair CX400 is brilliant, I read somewhere it puts out a fair bit more than the 400w also. On this week only offer too.

Off topic, Wayne, from what particular review did you grab that screenshot. As im running sli gtx 275's i noticed that the total system power usage was 599w at load, wouldnt mind seeing what cpu was used in those tests.:)

i have the 650watt modular, gotta say im pretty impressed. they are powercool units. and on the label at the side it reads:

+3.3v line - 24 amps

+5v line 24 amps

+12v line 22 amps

the +3 and +5 v lines give a combined 199wats max

they are very quiet, and seem to stay really cool. the sleves are nice quality. they come with 2 6pin pciE graphics connectors
1x 8pin cpu connector (VERY short. needs an extension if PSU is bottom mounted)
20+4 pin mobo connector

You cant argue with that honesty. Like any budget PSU really.

EDIT: ^ That was a comment regarding Naths post but it seems to of been removed

EDIT2: ahh hes posted below with a similiar comment.

OcUk PSUs are good for entry level systems. No extreme overclocking, no high end gfx etc. You just have to be sensible when choosing a PSU. In my ponion always over compensate then you can guarentee you will have enough power for your requirements.

I assume the OCUK PSUs are made by Powercool as another etailer sells them too but has more modalur variants. I was also wondering about using one of these to run E2160, 1 sata HDD, 8800GTS and 4GB RAM but was interested in reliability and warranty (as no info is provided) rather than what wattage is needed.

The current PSU is a 580W Hiper Type-R (+5yrs old) which is running a P4, 9800pro, 2GB DDR, 1 SATA, etc. and is really hot in normal desktop use - could this problem be PSU related or do P$ systems make PSUs really hot for some reason

Low 12V current for a 650W unit. As NathWraith says, a good bet for budget PCs, nothing more.

Did cry inside a little when someone in the GPU forum said they were running a GTX480 on one....

I've got a HX750w for my i7 and hd5770, won't OC either, but may get a new gpu at christmas, a nice powerful and toasty one :)

Actually, looking again, that's sold a bit short of 650W isn't it?

12V x 22A = 264W

5V x 24A = 120W

3.3V x 24A = 79.2W

For a total of 463.2W? Have I missed something?

i changed my psu twice in 4 months from silent pro 500w to ocz 700w and now i want to change again, my advice is if you think your going to upgrade in the future go for something good now, corsair hx850 is what im going to get, amazing psu, going to xfire two 5850's with it, should be lush.
