I Can't decide between 1GB 460 or 5850

I play the odd game at 1080p res on my 24" Dell.

My thoughts are going towards an ATI due to the IQ and vibrancy do ATI still have the edge in IQ?

Maximum £200 give or take the odd quid here and there

I was also thinking that because I'm not a serious gamer that a 460 768MB will be fine for £150...I'm thinking that 120 now on a 5770 is a bad idea?

Cheers

For my money, the 1GB 460 is the way to go. I tend to keep graphics cards for a couple of years, so an extra few quid spread over that time isn't a biggie.

You get Physx, Cuda (I know these aren't vital, but I like Physx), less problems with drivers (I've had both ATI and Nvidia cards), bit more future proofing with the 1GB over the 768Mb version.

If you do go the 460 route, make sure you get the MSI or Gigabyte variants, these seem to get the most votes for being quiet.

A 5850 is the better card.

You must decide if you think it's worth the extra money.Keep in mind that there is often quite some distance between the 768mb and 1gb 460s.

At 1080p the 5770 might struggle but it really depends on what the "odd game" is.

GeForce 460 1GB can be had for £175, Radeon 5850 for £195.

I would go for the latter, it overclocks well over Radeon 5870 clocks and in reality it will be faster card than 460. I had a few GeForces before and never found PhysX worth having a look at tbh. Afaik GeForces perform better in folding, if it's what turns you on.

Both cards are good, it really depends on what money you want to ditch into them.

I would say the HD5770 is over priced at £120 now and its worth sitting tight until the new card hype has settled down and prices have fell into line around the £150 bracket. If you can wait a few weeks that is.

Both cards offer good value for money. I prefer ATI to Nvidia but l can't deny that the 1GB 460 is a very good card for the price. Will you be using anything that benefits from cuda, like Adobe Premiere or anything like that?

As for image quality l don't know what is the current situation but in previous years ATI had better image quality than Nvidia. Recently though they are much closer in IQ terms and you would be hard pressed to see any difference between the two brands.

If you didn't have any problems with Nvidia cards in the past then a 460 would be the card l would be getting.

If you do get a GTX 460, definetly dont skimp and get one of the lower models. As some one said there is a big performance difference between the 460 models.

I would get one of the higher performance ones such as:

This card, can in some curcumstances rival a gtx 470

But then again, 5850 vs GTX 460.... I think either would be nice.

Make the decision based on your mobo. If its crossfire only go ATI, if its SLI only go Nvidia, if its an x58 or something similar (that can accept both), then you have a choice.

Out of the two, maybe the GTX 460 (the one I linked) is the better choice.

Actually its not maybe it is!

The GTX 460 is the price performance king at the moment! Iv seen many reviews.

Also if you spend that little extra now, it will save you haveing to upgrade sooner....

The Palit GTX 460, is the card for you!

Google some reviews and your see, its a great card.
