Hi guys,

I have a 24" Dell 2405FPW which I think I have owned now for over 5 years. It is still working perfectly and in excellent condition, one of the best PC purchases I ever made if I am honest, it still looks new and will probably last me another few years easily! :)

The problem is, it is lacking HDMI as it is quite a few years old now, even though HDMI seems standand in pretty much all recent monitors.

My question is, how can I connect my XBOX 360 to this monitor and get sound? I do not have the soundbar that came with this monitor but I think that requires plugging into a soundcard anyway.

Also, atm I have a HDMI>DVI converter which I am using to connect the XBOX to the monitor but my PC is also connected via DVI so I have to manually switch between the 2 depending on which one I am using. What other solution is there?

I don't want to sell this brilliant monitor for next to nothing just to fork out for a newer model with more inputs... :(

when i had mine running one the dell it was via vga cable which also has 2 phone cables for sound and a phono to headphone socket adaptor. used that to plug the sound cable into the soundbars headphone socket. worked preety well. and at night i plugged it into my headphone cmoy amp.

you can also use the component cables that comes with the xbox 360 on this monitor just fine and you will do 1080p as well. tho you'll need a source for the phone cables either a amp or sterie that has inputs would work well

I have the same monitor since Dec 2005 as well! Its still perfect in every way, no way I am upgrading it anytime soon!

I used to have my 360 connected to it. Use an MS VGA cable for the sharpest picture but if you can live with the slight blurryness try the MS Component cable instead as MS broke vsync via VGA cables on some 360 games with an update in Fall 2006 so some games tear the screen like crazy but are less noticeable with a component cable.

I replaced my Dell 2405's with 30" IPS panel monitors... yes the 2405's were good for there time, but the image quality and colours are very poor in comparison to an IPS panel that would cost about the same now as the 2405's did on release.

I use one of my 2405's with SkyHD now, using component, and the sound bar. You may be able to get a sound bar for cheap on a certain auction site like i did.

And the 360 has separate audio outputs, so it might just be easier to get some speakers for them.

If I get a HDMI to VGA cable for the xbox, will the picture quality be as good as with HDMI to HDMI?

I am gonna try make use of the optical out on the xbox...

It wont be as good.. HDMI, DVI and Display Port are all digital, and VGA is analogue... but VGA is one of the best analogue connections so it will be very nearly as good.

Cheers mate. Before buying one I'll probably try borrow one to test first, shame my Dell only has one DVI and no HDMI ports!

well its might not be as good but the pic quality it give over component is far better

I've got mine plugged in via component and then use the optical out through a Creative DDTS 100 decoder and through to my speakers. Never let me down :)

With PC connected via DVI, I've now connected the xbox to my monitor via component, the colours look too washed out for my liking but I will probably stick to it, I much preferred the picture through HDMI though. With the video signal going through component, I plugged the audio cable (red and white) into this ANCIENT panasonic DVD player I dug out, which has a 5.1 speaker setup with it. 2 of the speakers and the sub still work, so with them connected to the xbox, I get 'decent' quality sound. :)

I have to commend Dell for their monitors though, this one must be going on 5 years old now and has no dead pixels, no backlight issues or anything. Still gives the same picture as the day I bought it just a real shame it doesn't have any HDMI port.

cant remeber for sure but there should be an option to change some thing that makes the coulors appear more natural.

I also have the same monitor and am looking to replace with something that has HDMI. They have been going for between £150 - £185 on a well known auction site if in A1 condition.
