The free non invite version only allows you to listen to 20 hrs of music per month (Spotify Open), whereas if you're invited, you get unlimited listening (Spotify Free).

have spotify made an option in the client to limit uploading yet? Thats the only reason I gave up on spotify after trying it for 5 min with the free non-invite verison, the peer-2-peer software used up too much upload.
