Im buying RAM for a Maya rendering desktop, The more RAM the better apparently, but do you know if its more beneficial to get the faster RAM over more RAM?

The 8Gb 1600Mhz is triple channel, and the 8Gb 1600Mz dual

Thanks guys:)

Your question does not match the title.

What are you asking?

What type of processor do you have? This will determine if you need dual or triple channel.

In real world use you'll notice little difference between 1600MHz and 2000MHz memory.

If you have a dual channel mother board go with the 2 x 4GB kit. If you are on a tri-channel motherboard then you have a choice of 3 x 2GB or 3 x 4Gb (there are bigger kits too but they cost heaps).

But as to the other question regarding speed vs performance you will hardly notice the difference. Your application benefits more from total GB quantity rather than sheer speed.

Id say if youve got triple channel use it, it has higher bandwidth in triple channel than dual, so youd be getting more out of it.

If the application runs better with more ram, then you've answered your own question, get the 8GB kit.

There's particularly little difference between them on triple channel boards. If you've got an X58 board available go for that, though I'd recommend 1333mhz ram rather than any faster ones. Especially if you can have 12gb of 1333mhz.

I'm using 12gb of 1600mhz ram downclocked to 1200 on an X58 board, though I don't use maya. Very good things happen to maya benchmarks if you can get a quadro card involved, which may translate into real life.
